Chapter 11: The Account Nobody Knew About

For a moment, nobody understood.

My name.

An account.

Opened without me knowing.

I stared at my father.

“That’s impossible.””

Dad nodded slowly.

“I know.””

Mia looked confused.

“Why would anyone open an account in her name?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone was thinking the same thing.

Vanessa.

We went straight to the bank the next morning.

The entire drive, I kept thinking about one thing.

How much of my life had been happening without me knowing?

The bank manager, Mr. Wilson, greeted us privately.

He looked uncomfortable.

“I’m sorry you’re dealing with this.””

Dad sat down.

“We need facts.””

Mr. Wilson nodded.

He opened a file.

“The account was created three years ago.””

I frowned.

“Three years?””

I was fifteen.

“What was it for?””

He looked at the documents.

“According to the records, it was supposed to be a savings account.””

“For me?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Dad.

“Did you open it?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Mr. Wilson continued.

“The account received deposits.””

“How much?””

He hesitated.

“Over time, approximately twenty thousand dollars.””

My eyes widened.

Twenty thousand.

“What?””

Dad leaned forward.

“And where did the money come from?””

Mr. Wilson looked at the papers.

“Your father’s account.””

The room became silent.

My father’s face changed.

Not because of the money.

Because he realized what it meant.

Someone had been moving money around while pretending to help me.

“Was anything withdrawn?””

Mr. Wilson nodded.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Several times.””

My hands tightened.

“By who?””

Mr. Wilson looked at the paperwork.

“The authorized user.””

Dad’s voice was low.

“Who?””

Mr. Wilson turned the paper around.

The name was there.

Vanessa Carter.

Mia covered her mouth.

“No.””

I looked at her.

She looked devastated.

“She used my name.””

Dad stood.

“Why?””

Nobody knew.

Until Mr. Wilson opened another file.

“There is one more thing.””

“What?””

“The account had a note attached.””

Dad looked confused.

“What note?””

Mr. Wilson read it.

“Future education expenses.””

I froze.

My father froze.

Because that was the first time the story didn’t look like simple theft.

Someone had created savings for me.

Someone had put money aside.

Someone had planned something.

But Vanessa had controlled it.

“Did she take everything?””

Mr. Wilson shook his head.

“No.””

That surprised us.

“How much remains?””

He checked.

“Almost all of it.””

Dad looked confused.

“Why?””

Mr. Wilson shrugged.

“I don’t know.””

I felt something strange.

Because suddenly Vanessa’s actions became more complicated.

She had lied.

She had manipulated.

But she had also protected something.

Something meant for me.

That evening, Dad confronted Vanessa.

Not with anger.

With questions.

She sat across from us quietly.

“You opened the account,” Dad said.

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Mia looked shocked.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I knew nobody would trust me with it.””

Dad stared.

“You stole from it.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I borrowed from my own savings.””

Everyone became silent.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I put money there after Elena died.””

I didn’t understand.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I knew one day you would need it.””

I felt confused.

“You hated me.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I was jealous of you.””

The honesty was painful.

“But I never hated you.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Dad asked:

“Why did you take money out?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because I was trying to fix a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a document.

“I found something after Elena died.””

Dad took it.

His face changed as he read.

“What is this?””

Vanessa whispered:

“The reason Elena was worried before she passed.””

I leaned closer.

The document was old.

And at the bottom was a signature.

My mother’s signature.

Dad looked at me.

Then he whispered:

“Your mother knew something about my family that I didn’t know.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Because after everything we had uncovered…

there was still one secret left.
