Chapter 1: The Dress That Meant Everything
I thought the worst thing that could happen on my graduation day was forgetting my speech.
I thought I would spend those final hours nervous, fixing my hair, checking my makeup, and pretending I wasn’t terrified of stepping onto a stage in front of hundreds of people.
I never imagined I would be standing in my bedroom, staring at the remains of the dress I had saved for months to buy.
My name is Aaliyah Carter, and that dress was supposed to represent everything I had worked for.
Every late night studying.
Every morning I woke up before sunrise.
Every time I told myself that one day, all the sacrifices would be worth it.
My father, David, always told me graduation wasn’t just about a piece of paper.
“It’s proof that nobody can take your future away from you,” he used to say.
I believed him.
Until someone decided they could take away the one thing I wanted to wear when I celebrated it.
That morning, sunlight poured through my bedroom window as I carefully hung my dress on the back of my door.
It was a simple design, but to me, it was beautiful.
A soft blue graduation dress with delicate fabric that moved when I walked.
I had bought it after saving every dollar from my part-time job at a local café.
I skipped lunches.
I turned down shopping trips with friends.
I counted every paycheck twice because I wanted to be able to say, “I bought this myself.””
I touched the fabric one last time before walking into the bathroom.
“Today is finally happening,” I whispered to myself.
For the first time in months, I felt proud.
Then I heard something.
A strange sound.
A sharp ripping noise.
I froze.
At first, I thought it came from outside.
Maybe a neighbor.
Maybe construction.
Then I heard laughter.
My heart immediately sank.
I stepped out of the bathroom and walked toward my bedroom.
The door was slightly open.
That was strange.
I always closed it.
I pushed it open.
And my entire body went cold.
My dress was on the floor.
The skirt had been cut straight down the middle.
One sleeve was almost completely detached.
The fabric I had protected for months was lying there like trash.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t even breathe.
Then I saw her.
Mia.
My stepsister.
She was standing near my desk, holding a pair of scissors.
And she was smiling.
“Mia,” I said quietly.
She looked up.
“What?””
My voice shook.
“You did this?””
She glanced at the dress, then back at me.
“Yeah.””
I stared at her, waiting for her to laugh and say it was a joke.
She didn’t.
Instead, she shrugged.
“It was ugly anyway. I did you a favor.””
My eyes burned.
“That was my graduation dress.””
“So?”” she replied.
I stepped closer.
“You knew how much this meant to me.””
Mia rolled her eyes.
“Aaliyah, you act like you’re the only person who matters.””
“I saved for months for this.””
“Then save again.””
My mouth opened, but no words came out.
“The ceremony is in two hours,” I whispered.
She smiled wider.
“Then you better find something else.””
That was when my voice finally broke.
“MIA!””
The shouting brought Vanessa upstairs.
Mia’s mother.
My stepmother.
The person I had spent years trying to impress.
When she appeared in the doorway, I thought everything would change.
I thought she would look at the ruined dress and immediately understand.
I thought she would be angry.
Instead, she sighed.
“Aaliyah, what happened now?””
I pointed at the floor.
“She cut my dress.””
Vanessa looked down.
Then she looked at Mia.
Then she looked back at me.
And somehow, she looked more annoyed with me than with her daughter.
“Mia made a mistake.””
I stared at her.
“A mistake?””
“She’s young.””
“She’s eighteen.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Stop making everything dramatic.””
My chest tightened.
“She destroyed something I worked for.””
Mia leaned against the wall.
“It’s just a dress.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“She’s not even sorry.””
Vanessa walked over and put an arm around Mia.
“You both need to calm down.””
Then Mia laughed.
“It wasn’t even an accident.””
The hallway went silent.
Vanessa looked at her.
“Mia…”
“What? I’m just saying.””
I felt something inside me break.
Not because of Mia.
Because Vanessa had heard the truth.
And she still stood beside her.
I picked up the damaged dress with shaking hands.
“I can’t believe you’re defending her.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“I’m tired of you acting like my daughter is some kind of monster.””
Before I could answer, a voice came from behind us.
“Who did this?””
Everyone froze.
My father stood at the end of the hallway.
David.
He had come home earlier than expected.
His eyes moved slowly.
First to me.
Then to the torn dress.
Then to the scissors in Mia’s hand.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Vanessa.
Dad stepped forward.
And the look on his face told me something.
He already knew.
May you like
But he still asked one more time.
“Who cut Aaliyah’s dress?””
