Chapter 7: The Woman From My Mother’s Past

I had not heard my mother’s name spoken with that much weight in years.

My father rarely talked about her.

Not because he hated her.

Because losing her had changed him.

My mother, Elena, passed away when I was eleven.

After that, my father became two people.

The man everyone else saw.

And the man who sat alone in the kitchen at midnight, holding old photographs and pretending he wasn’t crying.

I never knew everything about their relationship.

I only knew he loved her.

And now, years later, someone connected to her had suddenly appeared because of Mia.

I looked at my father.

“Who is she?””

He grabbed his jacket.

“Her name is Rachel Bennett.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“Mia knows her?””

Dad shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why would she know something about this?””

His expression became serious.

“Because Rachel was there when your mother made a promise to me.””

I frowned.

“What promise?””

Dad didn’t answer immediately.

That worried me more.

“We need to hear it from her.””

The drive to Rachel’s house felt longer than it actually was.

Nobody talked.

Mia sat in the back seat, staring out the window.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked small.

Not confident.

Not sarcastic.

Just quiet.

When we arrived, Rachel opened the door before Dad even knocked.

She was an older woman with silver hair and kind eyes.

The moment she saw me, tears filled her face.

“Aaliyah.””

I froze.

“You know me?””

She nodded.

“I knew you before you knew yourself.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Rachel, tell us what you know.””

She looked at Mia.

Then back at me.

“Come inside.””

The living room was filled with photographs.

And almost immediately, I noticed something.

There were pictures of my mother everywhere.

My mother laughing.

My mother holding me as a child.

My mother with Rachel.

I touched one frame.

“You were close.””

Rachel smiled sadly.

“She was my best friend.””

Dad sat down.

“Rachel, we need answers.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

She walked to a cabinet and pulled out an envelope.

“I should have given this to you years ago.””

My father looked confused.

“What is it?””

“Something Elena asked me to keep.””

My hands went cold.

My mother had left something?

Rachel handed the envelope to Dad.

His fingers shook as he opened it.

Inside was a letter.

A real handwritten letter.

The paper was old.

The ink slightly faded.

Dad read silently.

Then he closed his eyes.

“What does it say?”” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“It’s from your mother.””

I felt tears forming instantly.

“What did she say?””

Dad handed me the letter.

I read the first line.

*David, if you are reading this, it means Aaliyah is old enough to understand the truth.*

My heart started beating faster.

The letter wasn’t long.

But every sentence felt heavy.

My mother wrote about fear.

About mistakes.

About wanting to protect me.

Then I saw a sentence that made me stop.

*“Please don’t let anyone make Aaliyah feel like she has to earn love.””*

I looked up.

Dad looked away.

Rachel whispered,

“That was always Elena’s biggest fear.””

I continued reading.

*“If someone in our family ever makes her feel less important, remind her that she was never the problem.””*

My eyes filled.

Because those words felt like they were written yesterday.

Rachel sat down.

“There’s more.””

Dad looked at her.

“What more?””

She took a breath.

“Your mother knew something was wrong before she passed.””

My father became still.

“What?””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“She was worried about how Mia was being raised.””

Mia looked up.

“Excuse me?””

Rachel looked at her.

“I’m not blaming you.””

Mia’s face changed.

“Then what are you saying?””

Rachel folded her hands.

“Your mother noticed that Vanessa always compared you and Aaliyah.””

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

Rachel continued.

“She told me she was afraid resentment would grow if nobody stopped it.””

I looked at Dad.

“Mom knew?””

He nodded slowly.

“I didn’t.””

Rachel looked at Mia.

“She wanted you to feel loved too.””

Mia looked down.

For the first time, she looked ashamed.

Then Rachel said something that changed the room.

“But Elena also discovered something else.””

Dad leaned forward.

“What?””

Rachel reached into the envelope again.

She pulled out a small piece of paper.

“I found this after she passed.””

Dad took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then his face changed.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

I looked over his shoulder.

It was a note.

Written by Vanessa.

And it was dated only months after my mother died.

The first sentence made my blood run cold.

*“Now that Elena is gone, things will finally be easier.””*

Dad dropped the paper.

May you like

And for the first time…

I saw him look afraid.
