Chapter 10: The Lie That Changed Everything

The storage unit felt smaller after Vanessa walked inside.

The air was heavy.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

My father stood in front of me, holding the notebook that Vanessa had spent years trying to hide.

And Vanessa stood there like she was still in control.

Like she believed one sentence could destroy everything.

“Your mother wasn’t the perfect person you think she was.””

The words stayed between us.

I looked at my father.

I expected anger.

Instead, I saw something else.

Fear.

Not fear of Vanessa.

Fear that there was a piece of his past he didn’t know.

“Explain,” Dad said.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You want honesty?””

“Yes.””

She laughed quietly.

“After all these years, you finally want honesty.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You think Elena was innocent because she died.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t talk about my mother like that.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“You defending her without knowing the truth.””

Dad’s voice became colder.

“Vanessa. Choose your next words carefully.””

She ignored him.

“She made everyone believe she was perfect.””

I looked at the notebook in Dad’s hand.

“Then why did you hide this?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

She wasn’t angry anymore.

She was nervous.

“I didn’t hide anything.””

Dad opened the notebook.

“Then what is this?””

She didn’t answer.

He flipped through the pages.

“These are records.””

Silence.

“Dates. Payments. Conversations.””

He looked up.

“Your handwriting.””

Vanessa took a breath.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

She looked away.

For years, I had seen Vanessa as someone who always had an answer.

A perfect excuse.

A reason why everyone else was wrong.

But standing there, she looked different.

Cornered.

“You want to know why?”” she whispered.

“Why what?””

“Why I kept everything.””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because after Elena died, I knew I would always lose.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She laughed bitterly.

“Your father loved her.””

Dad said nothing.

“He looked at you and saw her.””

My chest tightened.

“That’s not my fault.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

And for a moment, she sounded almost human.

“I know it wasn’t.””

The confession surprised me.

But then she continued.

“And that’s what made me angry.””

Dad stared at her.

“Angry enough to steal from me?””

She looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

His voice echoed inside the storage unit.

“You took money from my account.””

“I was scared.””

“You lied about Aaliyah.””

“I was trying to protect Mia.””

I almost laughed.

“Protect her?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Yes.””

“By teaching her to hate me?””

Her silence answered.

Mia stood beside me.

I could see the realization hurting her.

All the anger she had carried.

All the jealousy.

Maybe it had never completely belonged to her.

Dad held up the notebook.

“This says you planned things.””

Vanessa looked at it.

Then sighed.

“I wanted control.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

“I wanted this family to feel like mine.””

Dad shook his head.

“You had a family.””

She looked at him.

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“I had a place in someone else’s family.””

Nobody spoke.

The words were sad.

But they didn’t erase what she did.

Pain explained choices.

It didn’t excuse them.

Dad looked at me.

“Aaliyah, take Mia outside.””

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

“I need to finish this.””

I didn’t want to leave him alone.

But I knew.

This conversation belonged to him.

Outside, Mia and I sat on the curb.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Finally, she whispered,

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

She wasn’t looking for forgiveness.

She was just saying the words.

“I know.””

She nodded.

“I really hated you.””

I looked down.

“I know.””

“But I don’t think I hated you because of you.””

That hurt more.

Because I understood.

Mia wiped her eyes.

“I thought if you stopped shining, people would notice me.””

I looked at her.

“And now?””

She gave a small, sad smile.

“Now I realize I was just helping someone else keep both of us small.””

Before I could answer, the storage door opened.

Dad walked out.

His face looked exhausted.

But calm.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He looked at the ground.

“Vanessa admitted enough.””

“Enough?””

He nodded.

“She’s going to cooperate.””

Mia stood.

“Does that mean she’s leaving?””

Dad looked toward the storage unit.

“Yes.””

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

My heart dropped.

“Who is it?””

Dad slowly lowered the phone.

“It’s the bank.””

I stepped closer.

“What did they say?””

He looked at the notebook.

Then at Mia.

Then at me.

“They found another account.””

My stomach tightened.

“What account?””

May you like

Dad’s voice became quiet.

“One that was opened using Aaliyah’s name.””
