Chapter 2: The Silence Before The Storm
Nobody answered.
The silence in that hallway felt heavier than shouting.
Mia looked at the floor.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“David, don’t make this bigger than it is.””
My father didn’t look at her.
He kept his eyes on the dress in my hands.
“Vanessa,” he said calmly, “I asked who did it.””
She swallowed.
“The girls had a disagreement.””
I almost laughed.
A disagreement.
That was what she called it.
Not destruction.
Not cruelty.
Not something that happened hours before the biggest day of my life.
A disagreement.
Dad finally looked at Mia.
“Mia?””
She lifted her chin.
“Fine. I did it.””
My stomach twisted.
She said it like she was admitting she spilled a drink.
Not like she had ruined something important.
Dad’s voice remained quiet.
“Why?””
Mia shrugged.
“I didn’t like it.””
“That’s your reason?””
“It was ugly.””
My father stared at her.
“You destroyed someone else’s property because you didn’t like it?””
Mia rolled her eyes.
“You’re acting like it’s a car.””
“No,” Dad replied.
His voice was low.
“I’m acting like it belonged to someone else.””
Vanessa stepped between them.
“David, she’s a teenager. You’re overreacting.””
Dad finally looked at her.
And for the first time, I saw Vanessa look uncomfortable.
“You think I’m overreacting?””
She sighed.
“I think you’re making a scene.””
Dad looked around the hallway.
At the torn dress.
At the scissors.
At me trying not to cry.
Then he nodded slowly.
“Interesting.””
“What’s interesting?”” Vanessa asked.
“That when Aaliyah’s things are destroyed, it’s drama.””
He looked at Mia.
“But when Mia wants something, everyone moves mountains.””
Mia’s face changed.
“Dad, seriously?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he walked downstairs.
Nobody moved.
I thought he was leaving.
I thought maybe this was going to become another family argument that disappeared by dinner.
That had happened before.
Whenever Mia crossed a line, Vanessa found a reason.
“She’s stressed.””
“She’s young.””
“She didn’t mean it.””
But this time felt different.
Because Dad wasn’t yelling.
He wasn’t angry.
He was calm.
And that scared Mia more than anything.
A few minutes later, footsteps came back up the stairs.
Dad appeared holding something.
Mia immediately recognized it.
Her face changed.
“Dad…”
In his hands was a designer handbag.
The same handbag Vanessa had bought Mia for her eighteenth birthday.
A $3,000 bag she had shown everyone online.
The bag Mia carried everywhere.
The bag she protected like it was priceless.
“What are you doing?”” Mia asked.
Dad looked at the bag.
Then he looked at my ruined dress.
“It’s interesting.””
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
“This bag is expensive.””
Mia stepped forward.
“Obviously.””
“And Aaliyah’s dress was expensive to her.””
“That’s different.””
Dad raised an eyebrow.
“How?””
Mia opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa suddenly moved closer.
“David, don’t.””
He ignored her.
Mia’s confidence started disappearing.
“Dad, you’re being ridiculous.””
He looked at her.
“Am I?””
Then he picked up the scissors.
My breath caught.
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“David.””
He placed the scissors against the leather.
“Wait.””
Mia’s voice cracked.
For the first time that morning, she sounded afraid.
“Dad, don’t touch my bag.””
He looked directly at her.
“It’s just a bag.””
Then he made one clean cut.
The sound was quiet.
But Mia screamed.
“My bag!””
The damaged leather fell from his hand.
Mia stared at it like she couldn’t understand what she was seeing.
“That cost three thousand dollars!””
Dad nodded.
“And Aaliyah’s dress cost months of effort.””
Vanessa looked furious.
“How could you do that to her?””
Dad turned toward her.
The question hung in the air.
Then he said something that made both of them freeze.
“How could you watch what she did to Aaliyah and defend her?””
Nobody answered.
Dad placed the scissors on the table.
Then he looked at Mia.
“You need to understand something.””
Mia wiped her eyes.
“What?””
Dad pointed toward the damaged bag.
“Money can replace things.””
Then he pointed toward me.
“But trust is harder to replace.””
I looked at my father.
I had never seen him like this.
Not angry.
Not loud.
Just disappointed.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“And we need to talk about what happens next.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
Dad looked toward the hallway.
“Pack a suitcase.””
Everyone froze.
May you like
Mia stared at him.
“Dad… what?””
