Chapter 9: The Woman Who Came Back From The Dead
The drive home was silent.
Emma slept in the back seat, holding Bunny against her chest.
I kept looking at the rearview mirror.
Checking.
Making sure she was still there.
Alive.
Safe.
But my mind was somewhere else.
With Laura.
With Vanessa.
With the impossible truth that my entire life had been built on secrets.
When we arrived home, Laura stood in the living room.
The house felt different.
Not because anything had changed.
Because now I knew.
Every corner had a story I didn’t know.
Every room had a secret.
Emma went upstairs with Detective Harris’s partner while we talked.
I waited.
I wanted answers.
“Why did Vanessa say you were running?””
Laura sat down slowly.
“Because I was.””
The honesty hurt.
I looked at her.
“From me?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“From what your father created.””
I stayed silent.
Laura looked toward the window.
“After your father died, I thought everything would end.””
“But it didn’t.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Michael found the files.””
I remembered the photograph.
My brother standing in our house.
“Michael was alive.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he come to me?””
Laura looked down.
“Because he blamed you.””
“For what?””
She took a breath.
“For not seeing the truth.””
The words cut deep.
But maybe because some part of me believed them.
“I was his brother.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
“Because he thought you chose your father over him.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not true.””
“I know.””
Laura reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this for two years.””
Inside was a letter.
From Michael.
I unfolded it.
The handwriting was familiar.
*Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, then Laura failed to keep you away from the truth.*
My hands tightened.
*I know you think I betrayed you. Maybe I did.*
*But I found something about our family that changed everything.*
I continued reading.
*Father didn’t just watch people. He controlled them. He collected secrets. He destroyed anyone who threatened him.*
My heart raced.
Then the final lines.
*The night Laura disappeared, I was there.*
I stopped.
I looked at Laura.
“You were with him?””
She nodded.
“I was.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael was trying to save me.””
The room went silent.
Then a sound came from upstairs.
Emma.
“Daddy!””
I ran.
She was standing at the top of the stairs.
Terrified.
“What happened?””
She pointed toward her room.
“Someone was inside.””
My blood turned cold.
I rushed in.
The window was open.
The room was empty.
But on her bed was something new.
A photograph.
I picked it up.
It was a picture of me.
Holding baby Emma.
Taken the day she was born.
On the back was a message.
My hands shook as I read it.
*You found Laura.*
A second line appeared beneath it.
*Now find the person who killed her.*
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A voice whispered:
“Daniel.””
I froze.
Because I recognized it.
It was Michael.
But he sounded terrified.
“Don’t trust Laura.””
The call ended.
And on the other side of the room…
Laura was standing there.
May you like
Crying.
Because she had heard every word.
