Chapter 14: The Last Lie
Michael placed the file on the desk.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody spoke.
The man I thought had been dead for three years stood in front of me.
My brother.
My family.
My biggest unanswered question.
“You’re alive.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His eyes dropped.
“Because I was trying to survive.””
I felt anger rising.
“You let me bury you.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe you were gone.””
“I know.””
“You watched me suffer.””
His face broke.
“I know.””
That was somehow worse.
Because he wasn’t denying it.
He was accepting every accusation.
Laura stepped closer.
“Michael, tell him.””
Michael looked at her.
Then at me.
“The night Laura disappeared…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“I was there.””
My chest tightened.
“You said you were saving her.””
“I was.””
“Then why did she disappear?””
Michael looked down.
“Because she found the files.””
“What files?””
“The ones proving our father had been manipulating people for years.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then back at Michael.
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
Michael laughed quietly.
“Because I thought you were already part of it.””
The words hurt.
“I was your brother.””
“And I loved you.””
He looked at me.
“That’s why I couldn’t risk it.””
I didn’t understand.
“You thought I was involved?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I thought someone would use you against me.””
A long silence followed.
Then Michael opened the file.
Inside were documents.
Names.
Payments.
Plans.
And one document with my name.
I picked it up.
My hands went cold.
It was a psychological profile.
About me.
My fears.
My habits.
My weaknesses.
Someone had studied me.
For years.
Michael pointed at it.
“Your father created this.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“To control you.””
The answer made me sick.
Then Laura spoke.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
She was crying.
“There’s something else.””
I knew I didn’t want to hear it.
But I needed to.
“What?””
She looked at Emma.
Then back at me.
“The accident wasn’t meant to kill me.””
I froze.
“What?””
“It was meant to make you trust Vanessa.””
The room went silent.
My mind raced.
Vanessa.
The cameras.
The marriage.
Emma’s fear.
Everything.
“She was supposed to replace me.””
Laura whispered.
“She was supposed to become the person you relied on.””
I closed my eyes.
The betrayal felt endless.
Then Emma spoke.
Quietly.
“Daddy.””
I looked down.
“Yes?””
She hugged Bunny.
“Are we safe now?””
That question destroyed me.
Because for years, I had promised her safety.
And I had failed.
I knelt beside her.
“Yes.””
I held her.
“We’re safe.””
Behind me, Ethan spoke.
“Not yet.””
Everyone turned.
He was holding a small device.
A remote.
Michael immediately reacted.
“Ethan.””
Ethan smiled sadly.
“I’m sorry.””
Detective Harris appeared at the doorway with officers behind him.
“Drop it.””
Ethan looked around.
Then laughed.
“You still think I’m the villain.””
I stared at him.
“Aren’t you?””
His expression changed.
“No.””
He looked at Michael.
“Ask him what really happened that night.””
My eyes moved to Michael.
And I saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
“What is he talking about?””
Michael said nothing.
“Michael.””
He closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“I wasn’t the one who caused the accident.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who was?””
Michael looked directly at me.
And the answer destroyed everything.
“Daniel…”
May you like
A tear fell down his face.
“It was me.””
