Chapter 6: The Woman In The Photograph
I stared at the image until my eyes burned.
Emma was sitting on the floor.
Her stuffed rabbit was in her arms.
She looked scared.
But she was alive.
That was the only thing that mattered.
Then I looked at the person standing behind her.
The woman I had spent two years mourning.
The woman I had watched being lowered into the ground.
Laura.
My wife.
Emma’s mother.
Detective Harris took the phone from my hand.
His face changed.
“Daniel…”
“I know.””
He zoomed in.
The picture was clear.
Too clear.
Laura was standing behind Emma with one hand resting on her shoulder.
She looked older.
Tired.
But alive.
“No,” I whispered.
Detective Harris looked at me.
“You’re sure this is her?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because my brain was fighting against reality.
But my heart already knew.
“Yes.””
The detective stepped away and made a call.
I barely heard him.
Because all I could think about was Emma.
And Laura.
And every moment I thought I had lost them.
An hour later, we traced the location of the image.
A warehouse outside the city.
Abandoned according to public records.
But when we arrived, it wasn’t abandoned.
The lights were on.
A car was parked outside.
And someone was waiting.
Marcus Vale.
He stood near the entrance.
Calm.
Almost like he expected us.
Detective Harris raised his weapon.
“Don’t move.””
Marcus smiled slightly.
“You’re late.””
My anger exploded.
“Where is my daughter?””
He looked at me.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Where is Emma?””
“You think this is about hurting her.””
“Then what is it about?””
Marcus looked toward the warehouse.
“It’s about showing you the truth.””
The doors behind him opened.
And Emma ran out.
“Daddy!””
I moved before anyone could stop me.
I grabbed her and held her tightly.
She buried her face against my chest.
“Daddy, I was scared.””
“I’m here.””
I held her harder.
“I’m here.””
Then I looked up.
And saw her.
Laura.
Standing in the doorway.
Alive.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Daniel.””
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
For two years, I had imagined seeing her again.
But never like this.
Never impossible.
“How?””
Her lips trembled.
“I tried to come home.””
My voice broke.
“You died.””
She looked down.
“No.””
The word destroyed me.
“No, Daniel. I disappeared.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Then explain.””
Laura looked at him.
Then at Emma.
“I found out Michael was involved in something dangerous.””
My eyes moved toward Marcus.
“What does he have to do with this?””
Marcus looked away.
Laura answered.
“Everything.””
The pieces started connecting.
The cameras.
The messages.
The lies.
Vanessa.
I looked at Laura.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I couldn’t.””
“Why?””
She looked toward Emma.
“Because someone was watching us.””
A silence fell over the warehouse.
Then Emma grabbed my hand.
“Daddy.””
I looked down.
She was holding something.
A small envelope.
“Michael told me to give this to you.””
My heart sank.
I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
On the back was a handwritten sentence.
A sentence that made Laura’s face turn pale.
*The accident was never an accident.*
And below it was another name.
The person who ordered everything.
May you like
The person who had been controlling our lives from the beginning.
Vanessa.
