Chapter 8: The Truth Laura Never Told Me
The rain grew louder outside.
Nobody moved.
Vanessa stood in the center of the warehouse like she owned the place.
Like she had already won.
I looked at Laura.
“Tell me.””
She didn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than any lie.
“Laura.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted to protect you.””
“From what?””
She looked at Vanessa.
“From this.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“Still pretending you’re the victim?””
Laura’s expression hardened.
“You destroyed my family.””
Vanessa tilted her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Your family destroyed itself.””
I stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Both women looked at me.
“I want the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Laura took a breath.
“When Michael discovered what your father was involved in, he tried to expose him.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“Your father wasn’t just a businessman, Daniel.””
My stomach tightened.
“What was he?””
Laura looked at Marcus.
Then back at me.
“He controlled information.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does when you understand what he built.””
She looked toward the cameras.
“The surveillance network.””
The room went silent.
Detective Harris slowly turned.
“Are you saying…”
“Yes.””
Laura nodded.
“The cameras were never about watching us.””
She looked at Emma.
“They were about controlling us.””
I felt sick.
All those cameras.
All those recordings.
My home.
My family.
Everything had been part of someone’s plan.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“And Laura found out.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you come after my daughter?””
Her face changed.
For a moment, I saw something like regret.
Then it disappeared.
“Because Emma was the only thing that could bring you back.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at Laura.
“She knows.””
Laura closed her eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“No more secrets.””
Laura swallowed.
“When I found out what your father had been doing, I discovered he kept records.””
“Records of what?””
“Everyone.””
The answer chilled me.
“Everyone?””
“Business partners. Friends. Enemies.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“Families.””
Vanessa smiled.
“And Laura found something she shouldn’t have.””
“What?””
Laura looked at Emma.
“A recording.””
My heart stopped.
“What recording?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The night I disappeared.””
Nobody breathed.
I felt like I was falling.
“Laura…”
“I found proof that the accident was planned.””
My hands curled into fists.
“By who?””
Laura looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa didn’t deny it.
That was the worst part.
She didn’t deny it.
“You were supposed to die too,” Laura said.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What?””
Vanessa looked almost offended.
“You think I wanted to hurt Emma?””
Her voice became emotional.
“I needed you to understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That your family was never safe.””
I shook my head.
“You locked my daughter in a room.””
Vanessa looked away.
For the first time, she had no answer.
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Vanessa, you’re under arrest.””
She didn’t move.
Instead, she looked at Emma.
“I never wanted you hurt.””
Emma hid behind me.
“You’re lying.””
The words came quietly.
But they destroyed Vanessa’s expression.
Because Emma believed me now.
Not her.
Me.
Vanessa turned toward the exit.
Then smiled.
“You still don’t know the whole truth, Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“What now?””
She looked at Laura.
“Ask her why she really disappeared.””
Laura froze.
My heart sank.
Vanessa continued.
“She didn’t disappear because she was protecting you.””
She paused.
“She disappeared because she was running from what she did.””
The police moved closer.
But I couldn’t hear anything anymore.
Because Laura was crying.
And that was when I knew.
Vanessa had lied about many things.
May you like
But maybe…
Not everything.
