Chapter 11: The Room Beneath The House

The police searched the entire property.

Again.

But this time, I didn’t feel helpless.

I felt angry.

Someone had taken my daughter twice.

Someone had entered my home.

Someone believed they could control my life.

I stood in Emma’s room staring at the message carved into the wall.

Detective Harris examined it.

“This wasn’t done recently.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The wood damage.””

He touched the carving carefully.

“This was hidden under a layer of paint.””

My stomach tightened.

“Meaning?””

“Someone wanted this message hidden until a specific moment.””

I looked around the room.

A message waiting for me.

A trap.

Or a warning.

Then Laura noticed something.

She walked toward the bookshelf.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

She moved a row of books aside.

Behind them was a small metal handle.

My heart dropped.

“There was a door here?””

Laura nodded slowly.

“I didn’t know.””

Together, we pulled it open.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Nobody spoke.

Because we all understood.

There had been a room beneath our house.

A room nobody knew existed.

Detective Harris went first.

The basement smelled old.

Dust.

Metal.

And something else.

Fear.

The walls were covered with monitors.

Hundreds of recordings.

Years of surveillance.

I felt sick.

My childhood home.

My family home.

Had been built on top of a secret.

Detective Harris turned on one of the screens.

The system started loading.

Then an old recording appeared.

My father.

I hadn’t seen him in years.

He sat at a desk.

Older.

Cold.

Talking directly to the camera.

“If you are watching this, then someone failed.””

I froze.

The recording continued.

“Daniel was always too trusting.””

My hands curled into fists.

“He believes love makes people honest.””

My father leaned closer.

“It doesn’t.””

Laura looked away.

The recording changed.

A new video.

Michael.

Younger.

Standing in this same room.

Arguing with my father.

“You’re destroying people.””

My father smiled.

“I’m protecting our family.””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“You’re controlling everyone.””

My father stood.

“Control is just another word for protection when you’re smart enough.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then another file appeared automatically.

The date was two years ago.

The night Laura disappeared.

My breathing stopped.

The video showed the road.

The accident.

But the angle was wrong.

Someone had recorded it.

The car appeared.

Laura driving.

Then another vehicle approached.

A black SUV.

The same kind from Marcus Vale’s company.

The SUV hit Laura’s car.

Hard.

I felt sick.

It wasn’t an accident.

It never was.

Laura covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

Detective Harris watched closely.

“Who was driving the SUV?””

The video zoomed in.

The driver opened the door.

Stepped out.

Walked toward Laura’s vehicle.

I leaned closer.

Then I saw the face.

And my entire body froze.

Because it wasn’t Michael.

It wasn’t Marcus.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It was someone I never suspected.

Someone who had spent years pretending to help me.

Someone who had comforted me after Laura died.

The person standing beside the crashed car was…

My best friend.
