Chapter 7: The Secret Vanessa Was Hiding
The name on the photograph burned into my mind.
*Vanessa.*
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The warehouse was silent except for the distant sound of rain hitting the metal roof.
I looked at Laura.
She looked back at me.
And somehow, that hurt more than anything.
Because I could see the answer in her eyes.
She already knew.
“You knew,” I whispered.
Laura’s face tightened.
“Daniel…”
“You knew Vanessa was involved?””
She looked down.
“I suspected.””
My chest tightened.
“Suspected?””
I stepped back.
“My daughter was living with that woman.””
“I know.””
“You knew?””
My voice echoed through the warehouse.
“I trusted her with Emma.””
Laura closed her eyes.
“I tried to warn you.””
The words stopped me.
“What?””
She reached into her coat and pulled out an old phone.
“I tried.””
She unlocked it and showed me a series of messages.
Messages sent two years earlier.
To me.
From Laura.
My hands started shaking.
“No…”
I stared at the screen.
The messages had never reached me.
*Daniel, please answer.*
*Someone is following Emma.*
*Don’t trust anyone around the house.*
*Please, you have to listen.*
I looked at Laura.
“I never got these.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Her expression turned painful.
“Because someone deleted them before they reached you.””
Detective Harris stepped closer.
“Who had access to your phone?””
I thought about it.
Then my blood went cold.
Vanessa.
When Laura disappeared, I was broken.
I barely slept.
Barely ate.
I remembered Vanessa helping me organize everything.
My phone.
My accounts.
The house.
Everything.
“She had my password.””
Detective Harris immediately looked at me.
“When?””
“The week after Laura disappeared.””
A heavy silence followed.
Because suddenly every memory looked different.
Vanessa wasn’t just a woman who entered my life after tragedy.
She had entered when I was weakest.
She knew everything.
My daughter.
My home.
My pain.
Emma pulled on my sleeve.
“Daddy?””
I looked down.
“Are you mad?””
The question broke my heart.
I knelt beside her.
“No, sweetheart.””
“But Mommy said people get mad when they find out secrets.””
I froze.
“What secrets?””
Emma looked toward Laura.
Then whispered:
“Vanessa told me Mommy was bad.””
Laura’s face went pale.
“She said Mommy left because she didn’t love me.””
I felt anger rise inside me.
“What else did she say?””
Emma hugged Bunny.
“She said Daddy would forget Mommy.””
Laura covered her mouth.
For years, Emma had carried those words alone.
Detective Harris looked at Marcus.
“You knew about Vanessa?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“She worked for me.””
My head snapped toward him.
“What?””
“Not directly.””
“Explain.””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“Vanessa was hired to get close to you.””
The words hit like a punch.
“By who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He looked at Laura.
And that told me enough.
Someone bigger was involved.
Someone who had planned everything.
“Who?””
Marcus finally spoke.
“Your father.””
I stared at him.
“My father died ten years ago.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Marcus looked away.
“Because he wasn’t the person you thought he was.””
The room became colder.
I hated that sentence.
Because it was becoming a pattern.
Every person I trusted had another version of themselves hidden away.
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“We need to leave. Now.””
“Why?””
He looked toward the warehouse entrance.
“Because if Vanessa knows we found Laura…”
A sound interrupted him.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
Marcus moved toward the window.
His face changed.
“She’s here.””
My stomach dropped.
“Vanessa?””
Marcus nodded.
“She didn’t come alone.””
Outside, several vehicles stopped near the warehouse.
Lights cut through the darkness.
Laura grabbed Emma’s hand.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“If they separate us, take Emma and run.””
“I’m not leaving you again.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You have to.””
A shadow moved outside the door.
Then a familiar voice echoed through the warehouse.
“Daniel.””
Vanessa.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
Like nothing had happened.
“Come out.””
I stepped forward.
Detective Harris grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.””
But Vanessa continued.
“I know you found Laura.””
Nobody moved.
“I know you found the cameras.””
Her voice became colder.
“And I know you finally understand.””
The warehouse door slowly opened.
Vanessa stepped inside.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t afraid.
She looked relieved.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
Then she looked directly at Emma.
And smiled.
“Come here, sweetheart.””
Emma immediately grabbed my hand.
“No.””
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
And for the first time…
I saw what Emma had seen.
Not a stepmother.
Not a woman trying to help.
A stranger who believed she owned my daughter.
Vanessa looked at me.
“You really have no idea what your family did, do you?””
I stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
She smiled.
“Ask your wife.””
Laura went silent.
And I realized something terrifying.
Vanessa wasn’t here to explain herself.
May you like
She was here because she knew the truth about Laura.
A truth Laura had never told me.
