Chapter 9: The Woman Who Betrayed Me

I read Victoria’s name again.

And again.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

“She’s listed as a witness.””

Daniel nodded.

“That changes things.””

Maria looked at me.

“She may still be playing both sides.””

I knew.

That was the problem.

I wanted answers.

But I couldn’t afford another mistake.

Not with Noah.

Not anymore.

The next morning, I arrived at the police station parking lot twenty minutes early.

Victoria arrived alone.

No Marcus.

No security.

No lawyer.

Just her.

She stepped out of the car holding a folder.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

Like the woman I knew had been replaced overnight.

She approached slowly.

“Rocco.””

I didn’t move.

“Show me the documents.””

She handed me the folder.

Inside were printed emails.

Contracts.

Guardianship forms.

And the final transfer agreement.

Daniel reviewed them beside me.

His face became darker with every page.

“This is real.””

Victoria looked at me.

“I know.””

I closed the folder.

“Why were you part of it?””

She looked down.

And for the first time, she didn’t try to defend herself.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

I stared at her.

“So you helped people take my son?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I thought they were trying to get Maria away.””

“That was your concern?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I was jealous.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I hated how much Noah trusted her.””

Maria stood silently beside me.

Victoria continued.

“I saw how he ran to her. How he listened to her. How he looked for her when he was scared.””

She wiped her face.

“And I felt like there was no place for me.””

I looked at her.

“You felt insecure, so you helped them?””

“No.””

She looked at the ground.

“I started by asking questions.””

“Then?””

“Then Marcus showed me documents.””

She swallowed.

“He told me you were exhausted. That you were failing as a father because you worked too much.””

My jaw tightened.

“He manipulated you.””

“Yes.””

“But you believed him.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt because it was simple.

No excuse.

No denial.

Just the truth.

Daniel held up one document.

“This transfer agreement requires Rocco’s signature.””

Victoria nodded.

“I know.””

“And Charles prepared it.””

“Yes.””

“And you were supposed to marry him and gain authority.””

Victoria looked away.

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

Not because I didn’t know.

Because hearing her admit it made it real.

“You were going to marry me while helping them destroy my life.””

She whispered:

“I know.””

A long silence followed.

Then I asked:

“Why stop?””

Victoria looked at me.

“Because Noah asked me something.””

I waited.

She started crying.

“He asked me if the quiet house had no windows.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

“He said he heard Marcus talking.””

She looked at Maria.

“He asked if he would ever see Daddy again.””

The parking lot became silent.

Victoria’s voice broke.

“That was the moment I realized this wasn't a business plan.””

She looked at me.

“It was a child.””

I didn’t forgive her.

Not even close.

But I understood something.

She wasn’t the mastermind.

She was a person who made terrible choices.

And terrible choices had consequences.

Daniel flipped through the documents.

“Wait.””

He pointed.

“Rocco.””

I looked.

A signature appeared on the final page.

Not mine.

Not Victoria’s.

Marcus’ signature was there.

As an authorized witness.

But below it was another signature.

A name I didn’t recognize.

“Who is Elena Ward?””

Victoria’s face changed.

“What?””

She grabbed the paper.

“No.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“I’ve never seen that name.””

Daniel checked the date.

“This was added yesterday.””

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A message.

A photograph.

The image showed the quiet house.

But this time, someone was standing outside.

An elderly woman.

Holding a folder.

Under the picture was a message.

“Ask Victoria why Noah’s mother was investigating Morrow before she died.””

I stopped breathing.

Elena.

Noah’s mother.

Dead for two years.

But somehow connected to all of this.

I looked at Victoria.

She looked just as shocked as I was.

And then she whispered the words that changed everything.

“Rocco…”

Her hands started shaking.

“Your wife didn’t die because of an accident.””

I stared at her.

“What did you just say?””

Victoria looked toward the photograph.

“Before Elena died, she discovered something about Morrow.””

The world seemed to tilt.

“What?””

Victoria swallowed.

“She discovered they were using children’s records to control wealthy families.””

Daniel went completely still.

Maria covered her mouth.

And then my phone received one final message.

A scanned document.

From Elena.

Created three days before her death.

The title was:

“If anything happens to me, protect Noah.””

I opened it.

And the first sentence made my blood run cold.

“Rocco, the people you trust are not who they seem.”” :::
