Chapter 14: The Last Witness

By the time we reached headquarters, the board hearing had turned into a battlefield.

Not with shouting.

Not with chaos.

With documents.

Documents could destroy people quietly.

Richard appeared on the conference screen at the end of the boardroom table.

Calm.

Professional.

The same man who had taught me how to shake hands.

The same man who had attended my wedding.

“Rocco,” he said.

I stared at him.

“You burned the house.””

His expression didn't change.

“That is an accusation.””

“It’s true.””

“Then prove it.””

That was Richard.

Always calm.

Always prepared.

He didn't deny things.

He redirected them.

Helen Brooks looked uncomfortable.

“Rocco, we need to focus on the hearing.””

I placed Elena’s flash drive on the table.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“We need to focus on the truth.””

Richard smiled.

“Your wife’s recordings?””

“My wife’s evidence.””

The room changed.

Richard’s confidence weakened.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Daniel connected the drive.

Elena’s video played.

The entire board watched silently.

When it ended, nobody spoke.

Richard finally broke the silence.

“An emotional message from a grieving woman.””

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

“I knew what?””

“You knew Elena was investigating.””

He smiled.

“She investigated many things.””

“Because she trusted you.””

That landed.

For the first time, Richard looked away.

Daniel opened the financial records.

“These show unauthorized transfers from company accounts.””

Richard sighed.

“Old business disputes.””

“No.””

Daniel pointed.

“These transfers were hidden through Morrow.””

The board members looked at each other.

Marcus sat silently.

Broken.

He had lost everything.

But Richard was still fighting.

“Even if those transfers occurred, it doesn't change the concern regarding Rocco's stability.””

I almost laughed.

He was still using the same plan.

Remove me.

Remove Noah.

Control the company.

But he had made one mistake.

He thought evidence was only paperwork.

He forgot about people.

The boardroom door opened.

Victoria walked in.

Everyone turned.

Richard frowned.

“What are you doing here?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Ending this.””

She walked to the table.

“I was a witness.””

She placed her phone down.

“But not the witness you expected.””

Richard’s face changed.

“What did you record?””

Victoria pressed play.

Richard’s voice filled the room.

“Once Noah is removed, the trust becomes vulnerable.””

The room went silent.

His own voice.

His own words.

Victoria continued recording.

“I don't care what happens to the boy. The boy is a key.””

Nobody moved.

Richard leaned toward the screen.

“You manipulated that recording.””

Victoria looked at him.

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“But I wish I had recorded everything.””

That was the difference.

She wasn't pretending to be innocent.

She was admitting she had been part of it.

Helen looked at her.

“Why should we believe you?””

Victoria swallowed.

“Because I was wrong.””

She looked at me.

“I helped hurt a child because I was afraid of losing a family that wasn't mine yet.””

Silence.

Then Noah's voice came from my phone.

A recording.

I hadn't realized Daniel had connected my phone.

It was from earlier.

Noah saying:

“Daddy, come back.””

Everyone heard it.

A three-year-old child.

The person they built their entire plan around.

The person they treated like a business obstacle.

Richard looked away.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just old.

The board voted.

One by one.

The removal hearing collapsed.

The emergency motion was denied.

The investigation began immediately.

Marcus resigned before security escorted him out.

Charles agreed to cooperate.

And Richard?

He disappeared before authorities arrived.

But he left one final message.

For me.

A handwritten note delivered by his attorney.

I opened it alone.

"Rocco,

Your father chose you because he believed kindness made you strong.

He was wrong.

Kind people lose because they hesitate.

You will learn that eventually.""

I folded the paper.

Then I smiled.

Because Richard still didn't understand.

Kindness was exactly why he lost.

Because kindness created loyalty.

And loyalty brought people like Maria.

People like Daniel.

People who stood beside me when everything collapsed.

But there was one question left.

Why did Elena die?

The investigation answered part of it.

The medical examiner reopened the case.

New evidence was found.

The night Elena died, someone had entered our home.

No forced entry.

Someone she knew.

Someone she trusted.

The final report arrived three weeks later.

I opened it alone.

And the name shocked me.

Not Richard.

Not Charles.

Not Marcus.

Someone else.

Someone who had been hiding from everyone.

Someone who had a reason to keep Elena silent.

I read the final line.

And my hands started shaking.

May you like

Because Elena’s death wasn't caused by the people I suspected.

It was caused by the one person I never thought to question.
