Chapter 3: What They Recorded
My own voice filled the room.
“Tomorrow I’ll be working late. Maria will pick Noah up from preschool.””
Then Victoria’s voice answered.
“Good. That gives us time.””
My blood went cold.
The room disappeared.
The music.
The guests.
The decorations.
Everything.
All I could hear was my fiancée’s voice coming from a phone she tried to hide.
“What time does he usually fall asleep?””
The recording continued.
My grip tightened.
Marcus’ voice appeared next.
“Around eight.””
“And Maria?””
“She leaves by nine.””
Victoria laughed softly.
It wasn’t the laugh I knew.
It wasn’t the warm laugh she used around me.
It was different.
Calculated.
I stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Victoria.
“What is this?””
She shook her head quickly.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” I said.
“I don’t.””
Marcus moved closer.
“Rocco, let us explain.””
I looked at him.
“You knew about this?””
He didn’t answer fast enough.
That was his mistake.
Because silence was an answer.
Noah was standing behind Maria now, holding her hand.
He was watching everything.
I hated that my son had to see this.
I hated that the people closest to me had made him afraid.
Victoria stepped forward.
“Rocco, please. This isn’t what you think.””
I laughed quietly.
“Then tell me what it is.””
She looked at the phone.
Then at Marcus.
They exchanged a glance.
A glance between two people who already knew the truth.
I saw it.
And I felt something inside me break.
“Why were you recording me?””
Victoria wiped her tears.
“Because I was worried.””
“About what?””
“About you.””
I stared at her.
“That makes no sense.””
She lowered her voice.
“You’ve been under pressure. Your company. Noah. Everything.””
I looked at Marcus.
“And you?””
Marcus sighed.
“Rocco, we were trying to help.””
“By secretly recording me?””
“No.””
He hesitated.
“By understanding what you were planning.””
My chest tightened.
“What I was planning?””
Victoria looked down.
And for the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Like she was scared I would discover something bigger.
I walked closer.
“What else is on this phone?””
Nobody answered.
I unlocked the device again.
There were dozens of recordings.
Some were conversations with me.
Some were messages.
Some were videos.
Then I saw one file created that morning.
The name was:
“Noah - Final.””
My hands went numb.
I looked at Victoria.
“What is this?””
She stepped backward.
“Rocco…”
“No.””
My voice was firm.
“What is this?””
Maria moved beside me.
“Don’t play it if Noah is here.””
She was right.
I looked at my son.
His eyes were already filled with fear.
I picked him up.
“Buddy, Daddy’s got you.””
He buried his face against my shoulder.
Victoria watched us.
And for one second, I almost remembered the woman I thought she was.
The woman who helped Noah learn new words.
The woman who sat beside him when he struggled.
The woman I believed loved my family.
Then I remembered the broken hearing aid.
The hidden phone.
The recordings.
I turned away from her.
“I’m taking Noah home.””
Victoria’s voice cracked.
“Rocco, please don’t do this.””
I stopped.
“Do what?””
She looked at my son.
“Take him away from me.””
I looked down at Noah.
Then back at her.
“You were already trying to take him away from me.””
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Because I had finally said the thing she was afraid I knew.
I carried Noah toward the exit.
Before I reached the door, the phone in my hand buzzed.
A new message had appeared.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
My heart stopped when I read it.
“Rocco, if you want to know where they planned to send Noah, check the file hidden under Marcus’ name.””
I looked back across the room.
Marcus was gone.
And Victoria was standing beside the door with tears running down her face.
But she wasn’t crying because I was leaving.
May you like
She was crying because she knew I had found the first secret.
Not the last one.
