Chapter 13: The Key Elena Left Behind
The small brass key rested in my palm.
It was barely bigger than my thumbnail.
But it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
Because Elena had touched it.
Elena had hidden it.
Elena had known there might come a day when I would need it.
Maria stared at the label.
“Rocco…”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“For Noah.””
Richard watched us from the ambulance.
That smile was gone now.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
“You don’t know what that key opens,” he said.
I turned toward him.
“And you do.””
He looked away.
That was enough.
I handed the key to Daniel.
“Find out.””
Richard laughed softly.
“You think Elena left you a treasure map?””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I think she left me a warning.””
The firefighters continued working behind us.
The house where I had brought Noah home after his birth was slowly disappearing.
But somehow, I felt closer to Elena than I had in two years.
Because she had known.
She had seen the danger coming.
And she had tried to protect us.
Daniel examined the key.
“There’s a number engraved here.””
I looked closer.
A tiny sequence was carved into the metal.
“17-B.””
Maria suddenly froze.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“You know it?””
She hesitated.
“When I worked in medical advocacy, there was an old storage archive connected to family records.””
“What archive?””
“Room 17-B.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Morrow?””
She nodded slowly.
“I think so.””
Richard heard that.
His expression changed.
Just for a second.
But I saw fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Maria,” I said quietly.
“Why would Elena leave something connected to Morrow with you?””
She looked hurt.
“I don’t know.””
Then she stopped.
Her face changed.
“Wait.””
“What?””
“When I was hired by you, you asked for someone who understood Noah’s medical history.””
I nodded.
“You said Elena had kept everything organized.””
“Yes.””
Maria swallowed.
“I never questioned why your job listing mentioned a specific archive system.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Because someone guided you toward it.””
Exactly.
Someone wanted Maria close to Noah.
But why?
The answer came from the burning house.
A firefighter approached.
“Mr. DeLuca?””
“Yes?””
“We found something strange.””
He handed me a small metal box.
“It was hidden behind a wall in the upstairs bedroom.””
My breath stopped.
The bedroom where Elena had worked.
The bedroom where she kept Noah's records.
The box had no lock.
Only a small indentation.
The brass key fit perfectly.
Inside was a flash drive.
A handwritten letter.
And one photograph.
The photograph showed Elena.
Standing beside Maria.
I stared.
My heart dropped.
Because the woman beside Elena was not the older Maria Santos from the fake medical record.
It was my Maria.
Six years ago.
Before she worked for me.
Before I knew her.
I looked at Maria.
She covered her mouth.
“I don’t remember this.””
I unfolded Elena’s letter.
My hands shook.
“Rocco,
If you found this, it means they discovered the records.
Please listen carefully.
Maria Santos saved Noah before you ever met her.””
I looked up.
Maria was crying.
“What?””
I kept reading.
“After Noah’s diagnosis, I learned someone inside the medical system was changing records. Maria helped me trace the pattern. She was the only person who believed me.””
The world went silent.
Maria whispered:
“I remember now.””
Everyone looked at her.
She closed her eyes.
“I was working with Elena.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she asked me not to.””
I stared.
“She knew.””
Maria nodded.
“She told me if anything happened to her, I had to stay close to Noah.””
My throat tightened.
“All this time…”
Maria wiped her tears.
“I thought the truth would destroy you.””
Daniel took the flash drive.
“Let’s see what Elena saved.””
We connected it to his laptop.
The first file opened.
A video.
Elena appeared on screen.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My knees almost gave out.
“Rocco,” she said.
Hearing her voice after two years broke something inside me.
“If you're watching this, I didn't get the chance to explain.””
She looked directly at the camera.
“I need you to understand one thing.””
A pause.
“Maria is not the person you should fear.””
I looked at Maria.
She was crying silently.
Elena continued.
“The person who has been closest to your family is the person who has been closest to the danger.””
The video stopped.
Everyone froze.
Then another file appeared.
A name.
Richard Vale.
My blood ran cold.
The next file was an audio recording.
Richard’s voice.
“You should have let the trust transfer happen naturally.””
Charles answered.
“She discovered the records.””
Richard replied:
“Then make sure she doesn't get the chance to expose them.””
I stopped the audio.
The world narrowed.
Richard.
My father's friend.
My mentor.
The man who held Noah at the hospital.
The man who hugged me at Elena’s funeral.
He had been there.
All along.
I turned toward the ambulance.
Richard was gone.
The firefighter looked confused.
“Where did he go?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
His face changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Rocco…”
“What?””
“The emergency board hearing is still happening.””
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the screen.
“Richard Vale just joined remotely.””
My blood ran cold.
“He’s at the hearing?””
Daniel nodded.
“And he just submitted evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Evidence claiming Elena was mentally unstable before her death.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
May you like
Richard wasn't running anymore.
He was attacking.
