Chapter 11: The Empty Chair
We reached headquarters at 8:17.
Seventeen minutes late.
Marcus had counted on that.
When the elevator doors opened onto the executive floor, I heard his voice through the boardroom doors.
"...which is why immediate temporary leadership is necessary.""
I walked in.
Every head turned.
Marcus stopped speaking.
I almost smiled.
"Sorry I'm late.""
Charles Bennett sat beside him.
Two attorneys were present.
Seven board members.
Victoria sat near the end of the table.
Her face gave me nothing.
That worried me.
Marcus recovered quickly.
"Rocco, this meeting concerns your recent behavior.""
"My recent behavior?""
He folded his hands.
"Threatening employees. Detaining guests. Emotional instability.""
I looked around.
"Interesting.""
One board member, Helen Brooks, frowned.
"Rocco, there are serious allegations.""
"I'm sure there are.""
Marcus stood.
"We have recordings.""
Of course.
He played one.
My voice filled the room.
"Nobody takes my son. Nobody.""
Then another.
"You have five seconds before security gets here.""
Then another.
"Don't raise your voice at him.""
Isolated sentences.
Removed from context.
Arranged to sound threatening.
Marcus stopped the audio.
"You hear the pattern.""
I looked around the table.
"I hear editing.""
Charles leaned forward.
"Denial isn't evidence.""
"No.""
I placed Elena's blue ledger on the table.
"But this might be.""
Charles went pale.
Barely.
But I saw it.
Marcus didn't.
That interested me.
"You recognize this, Charles?""
He stared at the notebook.
"No.""
"Liar.""
One of the attorneys interrupted.
"Rocco—"
I raised my hand.
"Elena kept records.""
Marcus' expression shifted.
"Elena?""
"My wife.""
Silence.
"She discovered unauthorized changes in Noah's medical records two years ago.""
Charles adjusted his tie.
"This has nothing to do with today's hearing.""
"It has everything to do with it.""
I opened the ledger.
"Morrow Family Services.""
Helen leaned forward.
"What is Morrow?""
Marcus answered too quickly.
"A residential care organization.""
I looked at him.
"Interesting that you know.""
His jaw tightened.
I continued.
"My son was scheduled to be admitted there Monday.""
Whispers spread around the table.
"Without my consent.""
Charles interrupted.
"That allegation has not been established.""
Daniel placed copies of the forged documents in front of each board member.
"It has now.""
The room changed.
Marcus stared at Charles.
That was important.
He hadn't expected the documents to surface.
Helen looked through them.
"This is Rocco's signature.""
"No," Daniel said.
"It's an imitation.""
Marcus stood.
"This meeting is about Rocco's fitness.""
Daniel looked at him.
"And your evidence for his supposed instability comes from recordings made without his knowledge by people attempting to remove his child.""
Marcus' confidence slipped.
Then he looked at Victoria.
"Tell them.""
Everyone turned.
Victoria didn't move.
Marcus repeated:
"Victoria.""
She slowly stood.
My stomach tightened.
This was the moment.
She looked at me.
Then at Marcus.
"Rocco became increasingly unstable.""
My heart sank.
Maria whispered, "No.""
Marcus relaxed.
Victoria continued.
"He became suspicious. Angry. Protective of Noah to an extreme degree.""
I stared at her.
She had betrayed me again.
Then she turned toward the board.
"And that's exactly what Marcus told me to say.""
Marcus froze.
Victoria opened her purse.
She removed a stack of documents.
"He gave me a script.""
She placed it on the table.
"He told me what words to use.""
Marcus stood.
"She's lying.""
Victoria looked at him.
"You told me to say Rocco threatened Noah.""
"I never said that.""
She pulled out her phone.
Then pressed play.
Marcus' voice filled the boardroom.
"Use the word unstable. Say he frightened the child. The board doesn't need proof; they need concern.""
Nobody moved.
Marcus looked like he'd been struck.
Victoria's voice came from the recording.
"What if they investigate?""
Marcus answered:
"By then Rocco will be out.""
The recording ended.
Helen slowly removed her glasses.
"Marcus, would you like to explain?""
He didn't.
Instead, he looked at Charles.
"Say something.""
Charles remained silent.
That was when I understood.
Marcus wasn't the person Charles was protecting.
Elena had been right.
Marcus wasn't running this.
Someone else was.
I opened the ledger to the final page.
"He answers to someone on Rocco's board.""
Seven board members sat before me.
I looked at each face.
Helen Brooks.
David Chen.
Samuel Grant.
Patricia Wells.
Robert Lane.
Anthony Mercer.
And Evelyn Shaw.
One of them had helped Charles.
But which?
Then the boardroom door opened.
My security chief entered.
He walked directly toward me.
"Mr. DeLuca.""
"What?""
"We traced the package sent to Noah.""
The entire room went silent.
"Who sent it?""
He handed me a printed courier authorization.
I read the sender's name.
Then looked slowly toward the table.
One chair was empty.
I hadn't noticed before.
The eighth board member hadn't arrived.
My father's oldest friend.
The man who had known me since childhood.
May you like
Richard Vale.
And the package had been charged to his private account.
