Chapter 7: The Boardroom Trap
I stared at the photograph until my eyes hurt.
Victoria standing beside Charles Bennett.
Marcus beside her.
Three people I had trusted.
Three people who had been building a cage around my life while I was busy believing I was protecting my family.
Daniel took the phone from my hand.
“When was this sent?””
I checked the timestamp.
“Eight minutes ago.””
He looked at me.
“Then they’re still there.””
I grabbed my coat.
Daniel immediately stopped me.
“Rocco.””
“What?””
“You cannot walk in there angry.””
“I’m not going there to fight.””
“Then why are your hands shaking?””
I looked down.
He was right.
I wasn’t afraid of them.
I was afraid of what I might do when I saw the people who tried to take my son.
Maria stepped beside me.
“Then don’t go alone.””
I looked at her.
After everything, she was still standing there.
Still helping.
Still protecting Noah.
And somehow that hurt more than betrayal.
Because I realized how close I came to losing the one person who had never betrayed me.
“Maria, stay with Noah.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Maria—”
“No, Rocco.””
Her voice was calm.
“I spent six years watching you sacrifice everything for that little boy. Tonight, you finally need someone to stand beside you.””
Before I could answer, Noah appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
His dinosaur pajamas were wrinkled.
His hair was messy.
But his hearing aid was still on.
“Daddy leaving?””
I walked toward him.
“No, buddy.””
He looked at my face.
“You sad.””
Three years old.
And somehow he saw everything.
I knelt.
“Daddy has to fix something.””
He touched my hand.
“Come back?””
My throat tightened.
“I promise.””
He held up his little finger.
I hooked mine around it.
Then I left.
Charles Bennett’s office was on the top floor of a downtown building overlooking the city.
The lights were still on.
That alone told me they weren’t expecting a problem.
The receptionist looked surprised when she saw me.
“Mr. DeLuca?””
“Yes.””
“Mr. Bennett wasn’t expecting—”
“I know.””
I walked past.
Daniel and Maria followed.
The conference room door was slightly open.
Inside, Victoria, Marcus, and Charles were sitting around a table.
Documents covered the surface.
They looked like they were preparing for a normal meeting.
Then Victoria saw me.
The color drained from her face.
“Rocco.””
I smiled.
Not because I was happy.
Because I finally understood something.
They had underestimated me.
“What a surprise,” Marcus said.
I placed the black phone on the table.
Nobody spoke.
Charles looked at it.
Then immediately looked away.
That reaction confirmed everything.
“You know what this is,” I said.
Charles adjusted his glasses.
“I think emotions are running high.””
“No.””
I leaned forward.
“Emotions are what you expected. Evidence is what you didn’t.””
Victoria stood.
“Rocco, please. Let me explain.””
“Which version?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The truth.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Is that the same truth where you secretly recorded me?””
Silence.
Charles sighed.
“This situation has become complicated.””
I laughed.
“Complicated?””
I opened the audio file.
The room filled with Marcus’ voice.
“Once the boy is placed, she signs the revised trust documents.””
Victoria’s face changed.
She looked at Marcus.
“You said those recordings were deleted.””
There it was.
The mistake.
Not denial.
Confirmation.
Daniel immediately pulled out his phone.
“Thank you.””
Victoria turned.
“What?””
“For admitting the recordings existed.””
She realized too late.
Daniel had been recording the conversation.
Marcus slammed his hand on the table.
“This is ridiculous.””
“No,” I said.
“This is the first honest thing that’s happened tonight.””
Charles remained calm.
Too calm.
“You don’t understand the full situation, Rocco.””
“Then explain.””
He folded his hands.
“You are a powerful businessman. You work constantly. You have experienced personal loss. Your son has special needs.””
I stared at him.
“You’re describing my life.””
“I’m describing concerns.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You’re describing weaknesses you planned to exploit.””
Charles didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t need to.
The silence did.
Daniel opened the documents.
“Charles, you created these?””
The older man looked at him.
“I prepared legal drafts based on information provided.””
“False information.””
“That has not been proven.””
Maria stepped forward.
“The assessment report claims Noah was evaluated by Morrow specialists.””
Charles looked at her.
For the first time, he looked nervous.
“How do you know about that?””
Maria smiled sadly.
“Because I read it.””
Charles looked away.
Daniel noticed.
“Interesting.””
Victoria suddenly walked toward me.
“Rocco, please.””
I stepped back.
She stopped.
“I never wanted Noah hurt.””
I looked at her.
“You crushed his hearing aid.””
Her face collapsed.
“Accidentally.””
“Then why did you tell him he was going to a quiet house?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came.
That was the answer.
Marcus suddenly grabbed his coat.
“We’re done here.””
Security moved.
He stopped.
I looked at him.
“You were going to remove my son.””
His expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
“Then tell me.””
He smiled.
A cold smile.
“The quiet house wasn’t the plan.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Marcus looked at Victoria.
Then back at me.
“The quiet house was only the first step.””
Before anyone could respond, his phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then smiled.
“Perfect.””
He looked directly at me.
“Your house alarm just went off.””
Every muscle in my body tightened.
“Noah.””
May you like
I turned.
And ran.
