Chapter 9: What My Mother Hid Away

The storage unit was in an old building on the edge of town.

The kind of place people forgot existed.

Dust covered the hallway.

The lights flickered above us.

My father held the key tightly as we walked.

Neither of us spoke.

Because we both knew.

Whatever was inside had been hidden for a reason.

The lock clicked.

The door rolled upward.

Inside was a small room filled with boxes.

Old furniture.

Photo albums.

A life my mother had packed away.

I stepped inside slowly.

It felt like walking into a memory.

My father found a box labeled with my mother’s handwriting.

EMILY.

He stopped.

“She prepared this for you.””

I touched the label.

My hands shook.

Inside were childhood drawings.

Letters.

Photographs.

Things my mother had saved.

Then I found a small recorder.

Old.

Plastic.

With a note attached.

For Emily. When you are old enough.

My father looked at me.

“Do you want me here?””

I nodded.

“I don’t want to hear it alone.””

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother’s voice.

“Emily, if you’re listening to this, it means something happened.””

I covered my mouth.

Hearing her voice again after ten years felt impossible.

“I need you to know something first.””

A pause.

“You were never the reason our family broke.””

Tears filled my eyes.

My father looked away.

“My choices were mine. Your father’s choices were his. None of it was your responsibility.””

The recording continued.

“But Vanessa will try to convince you that you are the problem.””

My heart stopped.

“She has always been good at making people doubt themselves.””

My father looked at the recorder.

“She knew.””

My mother continued.

“The truth is, Vanessa didn’t cause the accident because she hated me.””

A pause.

“She caused it because she was afraid of what I had found.””

I leaned closer.

“What did you find?””

My mother’s voice became quieter.

“Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””

My father and I looked at each other.

The same fear.

The same realization.

“There was someone helping her. Someone who had access to our accounts. Someone who knew our family.””

The recording crackled.

“I discovered money missing from the charity fund.””

My father whispered:

“No.””

My mother continued.

“And when I confronted Vanessa, she told me she had protection.””

A long silence.

Then:

“She said Adrian would never believe his own daughter over someone he loved.””

My blood ran cold.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

The recording ended.

But then another file started automatically.

A different voice.

A man.

My father stepped closer.

I recognized it immediately.

Because I had heard it before.

That night.

In the rain.

“Vanessa, we need to leave.””

My father went pale.

“That’s him.””

The voice continued.

“You said the girl didn’t see anything.””

Vanessa replied.

“She’s eight. Nobody will believe her.””

I stopped breathing.

The recording was from the night my mother died.

Then the man spoke again.

“What about Adrian?””

Vanessa answered:

“By the time he finds out, I’ll already be part of his life.””

My father closed his eyes.

The truth was finally out.

But then the final words played.

Words that changed everything.

The man said:

“After the wedding, we take everything.””

My father looked at me.

Because the voice belonged to someone we both knew.

Someone who had been standing beside us all these years.

May you like

And then the recorder revealed his name.

“Daniel.””
