Chapter 13: The Truth Daniel Was Hiding

Daniel sat across from us in the interrogation room.

For the first time in my life, I saw him without the carefully built image he had shown everyone.

Not my father’s loyal friend.

Not the man who brought groceries after my mother died.

Not the person who hugged me at my high school graduation.

Just Daniel.

A man who had spent ten years hiding the truth.

The police officer placed a recorder on the table.

“Start from the beginning.””

Daniel looked at my father.

Then at me.

His eyes stopped on me the longest.

“I owe you the truth.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“You owe my daughter much more than that.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I know.””

The room was silent.

Then he began.

“Vanessa came into my life before she met you.””

I listened carefully.

“She was desperate. She had debts. She was angry at everyone who had succeeded while she struggled.””

“That doesn’t explain anything,” my father said.

Daniel nodded.

“No. It doesn’t.””

He looked at me.

“Your mother was the only person who tried to help her.””

I remembered the letter.

The kindness.

The betrayal.

“She gave Vanessa money,” Daniel continued.

“She helped her find work. She even offered to help her rebuild her life.””

My father looked away.

“Then why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because Vanessa didn’t want help.””

“What did she want?”” I asked.

His answer came quietly.

“Your mother’s life.””

The words felt impossible.

Daniel continued.

“She became obsessed with your family. With the house. With Adrian. With the idea that she deserved everything your mother had.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“When did you get involved?””

Daniel looked down.

“When Vanessa found out I was struggling financially, she approached me.””

“And you accepted.””

“Yes.””

The honesty almost made it worse.

“She promised me money.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“So that was it?””

“No.””

Daniel looked up.

“At first, maybe.””

He took a breath.

“But then your mother found out.””

The room became still.

“She confronted both of us.””

I remembered the recording.

My mother’s fear.

Daniel continued.

“She told Vanessa she would expose everything.””

My father leaned forward.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I followed her.””

“Why?””

“To scare her.””

My father’s hands tightened.

“You chased my wife.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked sick.

“I wanted her to stop. I wanted her to think twice before going to the police.””

“And then?””

Daniel was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Daniel,” the officer said.

He finally spoke.

“I wasn’t the only one there.””

My heart stopped.

My father looked confused.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Vanessa was there.””

“We know.””

“No.””

His voice dropped.

“You don’t understand.””

He shook his head.

“She wasn’t just following us.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel looked at the table.

“She knew where your mother was going.””

My father stood.

“Because she planned it.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The word crushed the room.

“She wanted to stop your mother from reaching the police.””

My father stared.

“Then why did you say you caused the crash?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because I did.””

The answer made no sense.

“You both did?””

Daniel nodded.

“Vanessa blocked the road.””

I felt my breathing change.

“She made your mother stop.””

“And you?””

Daniel looked away.

“I hit the car.””

My father closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was unbearable.

But Daniel wasn’t finished.

“There’s something else.””

Nobody moved.

“I thought your mother died instantly.””

My heart sank.

“But she didn’t.””

My father looked up.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice shook.

“She was alive.””

The room went silent.

“She was alive when Vanessa and I reached the car.””

My hands went cold.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I heard her talking.””

My father grabbed the table.

“What did she say?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“She said Emily was in the back seat.””

I stopped breathing.

Because that was true.

I had been there.

Hidden.

Listening.

Afraid.

“She told us to leave you alone.””

Daniel wiped his face.

“She was protecting you until the end.””

My father covered his mouth.

Then Daniel said the sentence that broke something inside me.

“Your mother didn’t die because of the crash.””

I looked up.

“What?””

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“She died because Vanessa refused to call for help.””
