Chapter 12: The Monster Behind the Monster
For the first time since I had met Vanessa, she looked powerless.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Afraid.
She stared at the phone like it had betrayed her.
“You said it was an accident,” she whispered.
Nobody answered.
Because suddenly, Vanessa wasn’t the biggest threat in the room.
Daniel was.
My father picked up his phone.
“He confessed.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I didn’t know.””
My father laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I didn’t know he was going to do it.””
“You were there.””
“I was supposed to scare her.””
The words escaped before she could stop them.
My father froze.
“So you admit it.””
Vanessa looked away.
I watched her realize she had finally trapped herself.
“You followed my wife.””
“Yes.””
“You threatened her.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel caused the crash.””
Her silence answered.
My father turned away.
I had never seen him look so broken.
Not even after my mother died.
Because grief is painful.
But learning you trusted the wrong people?
That is something else.
“We need to leave,” he said.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Adrian.””
He stopped.
“I know what I did was wrong.””
My father looked at her.
But there was no softness left.
No love.
No hesitation.
Only disappointment.
“You don’t get to say that now.””
She swallowed.
“I was scared.””
“You were selfish.””
The words hit her.
And for once, she had no response.
We left the storage unit and went straight to the police station.
The evidence was overwhelming.
The recordings.
The documents.
The messages.
The financial records.
Everything.
But Daniel was gone.
He had disappeared before anyone could reach him.
For the next several days, my father barely slept.
Neither did I.
The truth had finally come out.
But it didn’t feel like victory.
It felt like losing my mother all over again.
One night, I found my father sitting in her old room.
The room we had avoided for years.
“She would be proud of you,” he said.
I sat beside him.
“I broke my promise.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“She asked me not to tell.””
“She asked a child to carry a burden.””
I looked at him.
“She was trying to protect us.””
“I know.””
He looked at the old photographs.
“But she was supposed to trust me to protect you.””
I reached for his hand.
For the first time in years, we cried together.
Then my father’s phone rang.
The police.
He answered.
I watched his face change.
“What happened?””
A long silence.
Then:
“You’re sure?””
My heart started racing.
He hung up.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“They found Daniel.””
“Where?””
My father hesitated.
“He wasn’t running.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“He went to the police.””
That made no sense.
“Why?””
My father looked at the floor.
“Because he says he wants to confess everything.””
A chill moved through me.
“Everything?””
My father nodded.
“But he also says there is one final truth.””
I waited.
The truth that had survived ten years.
The truth even Daniel had kept hidden.
My father whispered:
“He says your mother wasn’t the only person he hurt that night.””
I felt my blood run cold.
Because suddenly, I remembered something.
Something from the crash.
Something I had spent years trying to forget.
There had been another sound.
Another impact.
Another person.
May you like
And I realized…
I might not have been the only witness.
