Chapter 8: The Person Behind Vanessa

The name on the screen was Daniel.

My father’s oldest friend.

For years, Daniel had been the person my father called when life became too heavy.

He had helped after my mother’s funeral.

He had helped with legal paperwork.

He had even stood beside my father when I graduated high school.

I looked at my father.

“No.””

He shook his head immediately.

“Impossible.””

But his voice didn’t sound certain.

It sounded afraid.

The message remained on the screen.

DANIEL KNOWS THE TRUTH.

My father grabbed his coat.

“Where are you going?””

“To ask him.””

“I’m coming with you.””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“You stay here.””

I stood.

“I’m not eight anymore.””

That stopped him.

Because we both knew what I meant.

I was done being protected by silence.

Thirty minutes later, we were sitting across from Daniel in his office.

He looked surprised to see us.

Then he saw our faces.

And the surprise disappeared.

“What happened?””

My father placed the photo on the desk.

Daniel stared at it.

Then he looked away.

That was enough.

My father noticed too.

“How long?””

Daniel sighed.

“Adrian.””

“How long have you known about Vanessa?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

My father stood.

“Answer me.””

“Since before you met her.””

The words hit like a physical blow.

I watched my father’s face.

A person can survive anger.

But betrayal is different.

It changes the way someone breathes.

“You knew,” my father whispered.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Protect me?””

My father laughed once.

A painful sound.

“You let that woman into my home.””

“I didn’t know what she was planning.””

“You knew enough.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I knew she blamed your mother.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

He hesitated.

“Because your mother exposed her.””

“Exposed her for what?””

Daniel looked at my father.

Then at me.

“Vanessa was stealing.””

“From who?””

“From people she convinced she was helping.””

The pieces started connecting.

The charity.

The money problems.

The manipulation.

“She used your mother’s kindness,” Daniel continued.

“Your mother discovered it and threatened to report her.””

My father clenched his fists.

“And the accident?””

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t know.””

That answer felt wrong.

“You do,” I said.

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

“You know something.””

He went silent.

My father stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“Your mother called me that night.””

My father froze.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She told me Vanessa was following her.””

I felt cold.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your mother asked me not to.””

My father stared.

“She asked you to hide this?””

“She said if anything happened, you would blame yourself.””

The room became silent.

Then Daniel pulled a small envelope from his desk.

“I kept this.””

My father opened it.

Inside was a key.

A small metal key with a number engraved on it.

“Your mother gave me this before she died.””

“What is it?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She said Emily would need it someday.””

My heart stopped.

“Me?””

Daniel nodded.

“She said you were the only person who saw everything.””

My father looked at me.

The same fear returned to his eyes.

“What does it open?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t need to.

The number on the key was enough.

It matched the number written on the back of my mother’s final letter.

A storage unit.

My father took the key.

“We’re going.””

Before we could leave, Daniel grabbed his arm.

“Adrian.””

My father turned.

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Vanessa didn’t come back because she wanted your money.””

I looked at him.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She came back because she thinks your mother left something behind.””

My father tightened his grip on the key.

“What?””

May you like

Daniel’s eyes moved to me.

“Proof.””
