Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Vanessa’s Smile
My father didn’t sleep that night.
Neither did I.
The photo sat on the kitchen table between us like a warning.
Every few minutes, my father picked it up and looked at it again.
Like the answer might appear if he stared long enough.
“What did they mean?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
“Dad?””
He finally looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
That was the first time I had ever heard fear in his voice.
The next morning, we met the person who had called.
Her name was Claire.
She had worked with Vanessa at a charity organization years earlier.
We sat in a quiet coffee shop, far away from the neighborhood where Vanessa knew everyone.
Claire placed a folder on the table.
“I didn’t want to get involved,” she said.
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Then why did you call?””
“Because I saw what she did to your daughter.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were printed messages.
Emails.
Photos.
My hands went cold.
“What is this?””
Claire looked at me.
“Proof that Vanessa has done this before.””
My father looked through the pages.
“Done what?””
“Controlled people. Isolated them. Made them question themselves.””
I read one message.
A woman had written:
I feel like I’m always apologizing for needing anything.
Another said:
She makes everyone think I’m the problem.
My chest tightened.
Vanessa hadn’t just targeted me.
She had a pattern.
“She told me Adrian was the perfect opportunity,” Claire said quietly.
My father looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Claire hesitated.
“She talked about you before you ever met her.””
The words landed heavily.
I watched my father’s face change.
“Explain.””
“She knew your reputation. She knew you were successful. She knew you had money and that you were protective of your daughter.””
My stomach turned.
“She planned everything?””
Claire nodded.
“Not everything. But enough.””
My father leaned back.
The man who always seemed impossible to break suddenly looked exhausted.
“What else?””
Claire pulled out another document.
“This.””
It was a copy of a message between Vanessa and someone saved as “M.””
The message was short.
But it destroyed whatever hope remained.
M: Is he ready to sign?
Vanessa: Soon. I just need the daughter out of the way.
My breathing stopped.
My father read it twice.
Then a third time.
“What does ‘out of the way’ mean?””
Claire looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know.””
But I did.
I knew exactly how Vanessa had made me feel for months.
Like I was a problem.
Like I was standing between her and the life she wanted.
My father closed his eyes.
“I invited her into our home.””
“You trusted her,” I said.
He looked at me.
“I failed to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“I should have listened when you told me she made you uncomfortable.””
That sentence hurt because it was true.
There had been moments.
Small moments.
Times I tried to tell him.
And he always said, “Give her a chance.””
I had given her chances.
She just used them against me.
When we returned home, Vanessa was waiting.
Standing in the driveway.
She looked calm.
Almost relieved.
“I wondered when you would find out,” she said.
My father stepped out of the car.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa smiled.
Not the fake party smile.
The real one.
The one I had only seen when nobody else was watching.
“You really think Claire is telling the truth?””
My father stared at her.
“Are you denying it?””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“I’m saying you don’t know who you should trust.””
She looked directly at me.
Then she said the one thing I never expected.
“Ask your daughter why she never told you what happened the night your wife died.””
I froze.
My father froze.
Because Vanessa had just mentioned the one subject we never discussed.
My mother.
And somehow, she knew a secret I had buried for years.
May you like
A secret even my father didn’t know.
