Chapter 11: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
My father stared at the document for a long time.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“I never signed this.””
She didn’t react.
“Yes, you did.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“I never approved this.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You don’t remember.””
That sentence frightened me.
Because it was exactly the kind of thing she always did.
She didn’t argue.
She made people question themselves.
My father grabbed the papers.
“Explain.””
Vanessa sighed.
“After your wife died, you were never the same.””
“That was years ago.””
“Exactly.””
She stepped closer.
“You trusted Daniel with everything.””
My father froze.
The room went silent.
Because suddenly, we all understood.
Daniel had access.
Daniel had opportunity.
Daniel had been there.
“He forged my signature,” my father whispered.
Vanessa didn’t deny it.
“Daniel handled your financial documents for years.””
My father looked at her.
“And you worked with him.””
“Yes.””
The confession came so easily.
Almost casually.
I felt sick.
“How long?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Long enough.””
My father clenched his jaw.
“You both planned this.””
“Daniel planned most of it.””
That surprised me.
Even Vanessa sounded almost bitter.
“You were supposed to lose everything after the accident.””
My father stared.
“But?””
“But your wife ruined the plan.””
Because she found out.
Because she fought back.
Because she protected us even when she wasn’t there anymore.
My father looked at the documents again.
“When did you plan to take control?””
“After we married.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“You were going to marry him.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I was going to secure my future.””
My father looked at her like he didn’t recognize her.
“You never loved me.””
She didn’t answer.
And somehow, that was enough.
Then my father’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A voice came through.
Daniel.
My entire body went cold.
“Adrian.””
My father put it on speaker.
“Where are you?””
Daniel laughed softly.
“Still trying to solve the puzzle?””
“You murdered my wife.””
A pause.
Then Daniel sighed.
“Careful with words.””
My father stepped closer to the phone.
“You worked with Vanessa.””
“Yes.””
My hands tightened.
“You admitted it?””
Daniel laughed.
“You already found the recording.””
My father looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
“Why?””
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“Because your wife thought she could expose us.””
The words were almost emotionless.
“Your mother was too curious, Emily.””
Hearing him say my name made me feel sick.
“You knew I was there.””
“Of course.””
“Then why didn’t you stop her?””
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“Because I didn’t think she would survive the crash.””
My father closed his eyes.
I felt the world spinning.
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
Because Daniel wasn’t protecting her anymore.
He was protecting himself.
My father noticed.
“You’re scared of him.””
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“There’s one thing you still don’t know, Adrian.””
My father gripped the phone.
“What?””
“Vanessa wasn’t the one who caused your wife’s car to go off the road.””
The storage unit went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked shocked too.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“I was.””
The call ended.
May you like
And Vanessa whispered:
“You lied to me.””
