Chapter 9: James’s Last Secret
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was scared.
Because my mind refused to stop.
James.
My father.
The villa.
The hidden room.
Everything was connected.
And I hated that I was learning the truth years too late.
The next morning, I drove to the base.
Not for work.
For answers.
I found the old records from James’s final months.
Most people would have searched for military reports.
I searched for something else.
Anything.
A note.
A message.
A clue.
Something James left behind.
Because if my father was telling the truth, then James had known about the villa’s secret before he died.
Hours passed.
Then I found something.
A storage record.
A personal item logged before his final deployment.
My heart raced.
I requested access.
The box arrived that afternoon.
Small.
Simple.
Almost disappointing.
But when I opened it, I knew immediately.
James had always been careful.
Everything had a purpose.
Inside was his old watch.
A few photographs.
And a small envelope.
My hands shook.
Because on the front were two words.
*For Emma.*
I opened it slowly.
The letter was short.
But it was written by him.
My James.
*Emma, if you are reading this, something happened before I could explain everything.*
I stopped.
The room blurred.
I kept reading.
*Your father asked me to look into something connected to the villa. At first, I thought it was just a family disagreement. Then I realized it was much bigger.*
My breathing became uneven.
James knew.
*I found information that Richard was protecting. But I also discovered he wasn’t protecting himself. He was protecting you.*
I closed my eyes.
Why did everyone know pieces of the truth except me?
The letter continued.
*I wanted to tell you. I wanted to bring you into the conversation. But your father begged me not to. He said you had already lost too much.*
A tear fell onto the paper.
James had been trying to protect me.
Even at the end.
Then came the final paragraph.
*Emma, if something happens to me, remember this: the people who love you may make mistakes trying to protect you. But the people who use your pain against you are different. Watch carefully. Not everyone around you is who they appear to be.*
I read that sentence again.
Not everyone around you is who they appear to be.
A sound behind me made me turn.
Michael stood at the office door.
“Emma?””
I quickly folded the letter.
“What?””
He looked concerned.
“I found something.””
I noticed his expression.
“What?””
He walked closer.
“We checked the original ownership records again.””
“And?””
“There’s a problem.””
My stomach tightened.
“What problem?””
He placed a document on the desk.
“The person who originally created the trust…”
I looked down.
Then froze.
The name was impossible.
Because it wasn’t my grandfather.
It wasn’t my father.
It wasn’t James.
It was mine.
Michael looked at me.
“Emma, this trust was created before you were born.””
I stared at the paper.
“That’s impossible.””
“Yes.””
“Then how is my name on it?””
Neither of us spoke.
Because there was only one answer.
Someone had planned this decades ago.
Someone knew I would eventually become the owner.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Emma Carter?””
“Yes.””
“You don’t know me.””
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Victoria Hayes.””
I frowned.
“Should I know you?””
“No.””
Her voice became tense.
“But your father does.””
I stood up.
“What do you want?””
She lowered her voice.
“I know what is hidden beneath your villa.””
My grip tightened.
“How?””
“Because I helped put it there.””
Silence.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Emma… your father isn’t the person you should be investigating.””
I froze.
“Who should I investigate?””
Her answer came quietly.
“The person who has been pretending to help you.””
I looked at Michael.
May you like
And for the first time…
I wondered if I had trusted the wrong person.
