Chapter 13: The Name James Left Behind
I stared at the name on the paper.
My mind refused to accept it.
The room felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
Because the person James warned me about wasn’t someone from my past.
It wasn’t my father.
It wasn’t Victoria.
It was someone who had been standing beside me through every step of this nightmare.
Michael.
I looked up slowly.
He was watching my face.
And the second he realized I had read the name, something changed.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
He knew.
“Emma…”
I held up the letter.
“Why did James write your name?””
The silence that followed was the answer.
My father stepped back.
“Michael?””
Michael looked at him.
“I can explain.””
Those four words.
I hated those four words.
Because every person who had hurt me had used them.
My father.
My sister.
Everyone.
They always explained after the damage was done.
I stepped away.
“Start talking.””
Michael took a breath.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
He looked at the letter.
“James contacted me before his final deployment.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
“He asked me to help him investigate the trust.””
I felt betrayed.
“You knew James?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“He made me promise.””
I shook my head.
“You kept secrets from me.””
Michael looked down.
“Yes.””
My father stared at him.
“Why?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Because James discovered someone was trying to access the trust.””
“Who?””
Michael looked at me.
“That’s the problem.””
My frustration grew.
“No more half-truths.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
For the first time, Michael looked less like an attorney.
More like a man carrying guilt.
“James believed someone close to the family was involved.””
I looked at the letter.
“Someone close enough that he didn’t know who to trust.””
Michael nodded.
“He was afraid if he confronted the wrong person, the evidence would disappear.””
My father looked toward him.
“So you knew James was investigating?””
“Yes.””
“And you let my daughter believe everything was an accident?””
Michael’s expression changed.
“I didn’t know what happened to James.””
Nobody spoke.
That was the part that hurt most.
Not knowing.
Years of wondering.
Years of asking why.
Michael continued.
“James left instructions with me. He told me if anything happened, I should only reveal the information when Emma was ready.””
I looked at him.
“Ready?””
“Yes.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””
My father looked away.
Because he knew.
He had done the same thing.
Michael lowered his voice.
“I made mistakes.””
I looked at the hidden room.
“The whole family did.””
Then my father noticed something.
A missing box.
He walked toward the shelves.
“Wait.””
“What?””
He pointed.
“There was another file here.””
Michael’s expression changed.
“What file?””
My father looked at him.
“The original trust agreement.””
Michael went silent.
My stomach dropped.
“Someone took it.””
We searched the room.
Nothing.
Whoever entered had not taken everything.
Only one thing.
The most important thing.
The document that explained why I was connected to the trust.
Then my phone rang.
Victoria.
I answered immediately.
“Victoria, someone took the original trust agreement.””
Her voice changed.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
A pause.
Then she said:
“Emma…”
“What?””
“I need to tell you something.””
The way she said it made me nervous.
“What?””
“The person who took it isn’t trying to destroy the trust.””
“Then what are they trying to do?””
Her answer came quietly.
“They’re trying to activate it.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
Before she could answer, the call ended.
Michael looked at me.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He pointed toward the floor.
A small piece of paper had fallen from the missing box.
I picked it up.

Only three words were written.
*Midnight. Come alone.*
