Chapter 5: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I stared at the document on Michael’s phone.

For several seconds, I couldn’t process what I was seeing.

My father had not just moved into my villa.

He had tried to make it legally appear as if he had a right to it.

“Emma?””

Michael’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

“When was this filed?””

“Two months ago.””

My heart dropped.

Two months.

That meant while I was away on assignments, while I was working exhausting hours, while I thought my family was simply being difficult…

my father had been making plans.

Olivia stepped closer.

“What is it?””

I handed her the phone.

She read silently.

Then her face turned pale.

“Dad…”

My father immediately reached for it.

But she moved away.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

But firmly.

I had never seen Olivia refuse him before.

He noticed too.

“Give me that.””

She looked at him.

“Did you try to transfer this house?””

“It wasn’t a transfer.””

“Then what was it?””

He didn’t answer.

Michael spoke.

“Your father submitted paperwork suggesting he had an ownership interest in the property.””

David looked shocked.

“You told us the house was yours.””

My father looked frustrated.

“I said I was handling it.””

“No,” Olivia said.

“You said it was yours.””

The room became uncomfortable.

Because everyone remembered.

Every conversation.

Every assumption.

Every time my father spoke like he had already won.

I looked at him.

“Why?””

For the first time, he didn’t have an immediate answer.

Maybe because the truth sounded worse out loud.

Finally, he said:

“Because you don’t use it.””

I blinked.

“That’s your reason?””

“You’re gone most of the year.””

I stepped closer.

“And?””

“You have no children. No family here.””

My chest tightened.

There it was again.

The same wound.

The same words.

As if my life was incomplete because it didn’t look like his idea of happiness.

“You think a person only matters if they have children?””

He looked away.

“I didn’t say that.””

“You didn’t have to.””

My mother sat down quietly.

She looked older suddenly.

Like she was realizing she had ignored things for too long.

Michael continued reviewing the paperwork.

“There is another issue.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

He turned the screen toward me.

“The signature.””

I looked.

My name appeared at the bottom of a document.

Except it wasn’t mine.

My blood went cold.

“That’s not my signature.””

Nobody moved.

Michael nodded.

“I know.””

My father’s expression changed.

“What are you accusing me of?””

“I’m not accusing anyone,” Michael said calmly.

“I’m stating that this signature does not match Emma’s verified records.””

Olivia looked at Dad.

“Did you fake it?””

His face turned red.

“How dare you ask me that?””

But she didn’t look away.

That was the moment I realized something.

Olivia was no longer standing beside him.

She was standing across from him.

“I trusted you.””

My father’s voice softened.

“Olivia.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You made me believe my sister was selfish.””

I stayed quiet.

Because I wanted to hear her.

“I thought she didn’t care about us.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But she was the one who was protecting the only thing she had left.””

I looked away.

Not because I didn’t appreciate it.

Because I had spent years wishing someone would say those words.

My father suddenly looked at me.

“Emma, you’re going to let your sister turn against me?””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

Even now.

He was trying to make me responsible.

“No one turned against you.””

I looked at the fake signature.

“You did this yourself.””

He stared at me.

Then his expression became cold.

“You think you’ve won.””

I said nothing.

He stepped closer.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

Michael immediately moved between us.

“Mr. Carter.””

My father stopped.

But his eyes stayed on me.

Then he smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

Like he knew something I didn’t.

“You should ask your lawyer what happened before you bought this house.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

He simply walked away.

And as he left the room, I noticed something.

My father wasn’t scared anymore.

He looked confident.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

Michael watched him leave.

Then quietly said:

“Emma…”

I turned.

“What?””

May you like

He looked at the documents again.

“There may be something your father knows about this property that you don’t.””
