Chapter 11: The Truth About My Father
I left the restaurant with more questions than answers.
That was becoming the story of my life.
Every secret opened another door.
Every answer revealed another mystery.
But one thing was different now.
I wasn’t chasing the truth alone.
I had Victoria.
And I had evidence.
The next morning, I went back to the villa.
My father was there.
Standing outside.
Waiting.
For once, he didn’t look angry.
He looked tired.
“You met Victoria.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stopped walking.
“How do you know?””
“Because she always does what she thinks is right.””
I studied his face.
“You know her.””
“Yes.””
“Then explain everything.””
He looked away.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Finally, he said:
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Yes.””
“I was afraid.””
The word surprised me.
Again.
My father admitted fear.
“I thought if I told you the truth, you would hate me.””
I almost smiled.
“I already hated what you did.””
He nodded slowly.
“I know.””
That honesty hurt more than excuses.
Because I had spent years waiting for him to defend himself.
Now he wasn’t.
“Why did you make me think you wanted my house?””
He looked at the villa.
“Because I needed you to fight back.””
I stared at him.
“That’s your explanation?””
“No.””
He sighed.
“It was wrong.””
A pause.
“But I knew you would never investigate if I simply asked.””
I crossed my arms.
“You could have trusted me.””
“I should have.””
The answer was quiet.
Real.
For a moment, I saw something I hadn’t seen in years.
Not the controlling father.
Not the arrogant man.
Just an old man who had made terrible choices.
“What did Grandpa find?””
My father looked toward the lake.
“Your grandfather discovered someone was moving company money through hidden accounts.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“It wasn’t just one person.””
My chest tightened.
“Then who?””
He swallowed.
“People you know.””
The answer disturbed me.
“Names.””
He looked down.
“I don’t have all of them.””
“Why not?””
“Because your grandfather hid the evidence before anyone could find it.””
“And the villa?””
He nodded.
“The hidden room.””
I looked at the house.
All these years.
All those memories.
There was a secret beneath my feet.
“Why James?””
My father’s expression changed.
“He found something.””
“What?””
“A connection between the old company records and your husband’s final assignment.””
The world seemed to stop.
“James’s assignment?””
“Yes.””
“You told me his death was an accident.””
My father closed his eyes.
“I believed it was.””
“Believed?””
He looked at me.
“Emma, I never lied about loving James.””
My anger softened slightly.
Because I knew that.
My father loved James.
Everyone did.
“Then what happened?””
“I don’t know.””
The honesty scared me.
Because my father was finally admitting there were things beyond his control.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
I watched him listen.
Then his expression turned pale.
“Where?””
A pause.
“No.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“Someone entered the villa.””
I turned toward the house.
“What?””
My father’s voice was low.
“The hidden room.””
My heart started racing.
“But nobody knows about it.””
He looked at me.
“That’s not true.””
“Who knows?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
Then Michael’s name appeared on my phone.
A message.
One sentence.
*Emma, we need to talk. I found something about your grandfather’s trust.*
I stared at the screen.
My father looked at me.
“Who sent that?””
I didn’t answer.
Because suddenly I had the same thought.
