Chapter 7: What My Father Buried
I read the email three times before the words actually made sense.
*Your father was never trying to take your house. He was trying to hide what was underneath it.*
My hands felt cold.
For years, I believed my father’s problem was simple.
Control.
Pride.
A need to dominate everyone around him.
But this was different.
This meant there was something else.
Something he had protected for years.
Michael watched my face carefully.
“Emma?””
I looked up.
“He knew.””
“Who?””
“My father.””
I turned the laptop toward him.
“He knew something about this property.””
Michael read the message silently.
Then he leaned back.
“Did Daniel Brooks mention what was underneath the property?””
“No.””
“Only that your father was hiding it?””
I nodded.
A strange silence filled the room.
Outside, snow fell softly across the lake.
It looked peaceful.
Almost cruelly peaceful.
Because inside that villa, everything I thought I knew about my family was changing.
I called Daniel back.
This time, he answered immediately.
“Emma.””
“You said my father was hiding something.””
“Yes.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
“I need to meet you in person.””
“Why?””
“Because what I’m about to tell you involves documents I was instructed never to reveal unless certain conditions were met.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“Who instructed you?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Your father.””
The answer hit harder than I expected.
Michael looked at me.
“What did he say?””
I put the phone on speaker.
Daniel continued.
“Richard Carter asked me to keep specific records sealed after the sale.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed you would never understand why the property mattered.””
I swallowed.
“He thought I didn’t deserve to know?””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“He thought knowing would change how you saw him.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because maybe it was true.
My father had spent my entire life trying to control how people saw him.
The perfect father.
The successful businessman.
The man who always had the answer.
But what was he hiding?
“When can we meet?”” I asked.
“Tomorrow morning.””
After the call ended, Michael gathered his things.
“Emma, whatever this is, be careful.””
I looked at him.
“You think my father is dangerous?””
“I think your father is someone who has spent years protecting a secret.””
The next morning, Daniel met us at a quiet café near the lake.
He was older than I expected.
Late sixties.
Tired eyes.
The kind of person who looked like he had carried a difficult truth for too long.
He placed a thick envelope on the table.
“This belongs to you.””
I didn’t touch it.
“What is it?””
“Everything your father didn’t tell you.””
Michael opened the envelope carefully.
Inside were copies of old property documents.
Architectural plans.
Financial records.
And one handwritten letter.
My father’s handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
My heart tightened.
Daniel looked at me.
“Your father bought the villa decades ago.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t know the reason.””
I looked down at the papers.
“What reason?””
Daniel pointed at the plans.
“The property contains a protected family trust asset.””
I frowned.
“A trust?””
“Yes.””
Michael leaned closer.
“Why would a trust be connected to the villa?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because the villa was never meant to be sold.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
“Richard inherited it under specific conditions.””
I stared at him.
“But he sold it to me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because he believed you were the only person who could protect it.””
I felt confused.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
He pulled out the letter.
“Read this.””
I unfolded it.
The first line made my breath stop.
*Emma, if you are reading this, then I failed to explain everything before it became too late.*
I kept reading.
My father wrote about the villa.
About James.
About the future.
And one sentence made my fingers tremble.
*I didn’t give you this house because you were my daughter. I gave it to you because you were the only person in this family I trusted.*
I stopped.
Michael looked at me.
“Emma?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because underneath the anger I had carried for days…
was something worse.
Confusion.
My father had hurt me.
But maybe there was a reason.
Maybe there was a truth buried under all the lies.
Then Daniel spoke quietly.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked up.
“What?””
He pointed toward the window.
“Your father knows you have these documents.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
May you like
Daniel looked serious.
“Because he was the one who asked me to send them.””
