Chapter 12: The Room Beneath The House

We found the hidden room open.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The second thing was the silence.

The villa had never felt so empty.

Not even after James died.

Because grief was painful.

But this was different.

This was fear.

My father stood beside me.

For the first time in my life, we were afraid of the same thing.

Someone had entered my home.

Someone had found the secret.

Michael arrived ten minutes later.

He walked through the door quickly.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“You know about the room.””

His steps slowed.

A small reaction.

But I saw it.

“You found it.””

Not a question.

A confirmation.

My father looked at him.

“You knew.””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

But his voice lacked confidence.

I felt something inside me collapse.

“Then why did you text me about the trust?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because I found information.””

“What information?””

He opened his briefcase.

“I was investigating the original ownership records.””

“Why?””

He hesitated.

“Because I suspected there were missing documents.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“So you were looking for the room.””

“No.””

Michael looked at him.

“I was trying to protect Emma.””

“From what?””

Michael didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My father stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Michael’s expression changed.

“I knew there were questions.””

“Questions?””

My father pointed toward the hidden entrance.

“My family built that room for protection.””

Michael looked away.

And that was when I knew.

He had known more than he admitted.

I turned toward the hidden doorway.

The old lock had been damaged.

Inside was darkness.

But something was different.

The room had been searched.

Papers were scattered.

Boxes were open.

Someone had already taken something.

Michael looked inside.

“Someone was here.””

I nodded.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then I noticed something.

On the floor.

A photograph.

I picked it up.

It was old.

My grandfather.

My father.

And another person.

A woman.

I recognized her.

Victoria.

But there was something else.

Written on the back.

A date.

And a sentence.

*The truth must be protected until Emma is ready.*

My father saw it.

His face changed.

“She knew.””

“Knew what?””

He looked at the photograph.

“That you were always supposed to find this.””

I looked around the room.

The hidden documents.

The old records.

The secrets.

Everything had led here.

Then Michael spoke.

“Emma.””

I turned.

He was holding a small envelope.

“Someone left this behind.””

“Who?””

He looked at the handwriting.

Then froze.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

I recognized the writing instantly.

James.

My hands shook.

Impossible.

James had been gone for years.

But the envelope had my name.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was one page.

Only one sentence.

*Emma, if you found this, it means they finally told you the truth. But there is one person you still cannot trust.*

My heart stopped.

Below the sentence was a name.

I stared at it.

May you like

Then slowly looked up.

Because the name written on the paper was someone standing in the room with me.
