Chapter 6: The Signature I Never Gave

I stared at the insurance document.

My name appeared at the bottom.

My signature was beneath it.

It looked exactly like mine.

The same slanted E.

The same long final stroke in Carter.

But I had never seen the document before.

"Who submitted this?""

Detective Miller examined his notes.

"The application was processed through a financial office connected to Daniel Mercer.""

I looked at my mother.

"Did you know about this?""

She nodded slowly.

"Vanessa told me the policy was for family protection.""

"How much?""

Miller answered.

"Two million dollars.""

I stepped backward.

Two million dollars.

That was the amount someone would receive if Rachel died.

I looked at my mother.

"You were going to collect two million dollars from your own daughter-in-law's death?""

Margaret began shaking her head.

"I didn't know the accident was going to happen.""

"But you knew about the policy!""

"Yes.""

"YOU KNEW?""

She covered her face.

"I thought it was just paperwork. Vanessa told me you had arranged it because you wanted to protect the family.""

I looked at the signature again.

"That's not my signature.""

Miller nodded.

"We've already requested a handwriting examination.""

Ryan suddenly spoke.

"Daniel had access to Ethan's old business files.""

I turned.

"What?""

"He used to handle Dad's estate. He had copies of your financial records, old contracts, and your signature samples.""

Rachel looked at Ryan.

"That's how they forged the property transfers.""

Ryan nodded.

"Yes.""

I rubbed my forehead.

Everything was connecting.

The fake pregnancy.

The marriage.

The house.

The insurance.

But one question remained.

"Why did Vanessa need me to marry her?""

Rachel answered quietly.

"Because of the trust.""

She opened her handbag and removed a thick legal folder.

"Your father placed the properties into a family trust before he died. You are the primary beneficiary. But there was a clause.""

I frowned.

"What clause?""

Rachel turned to a marked page.

"Your father's estate lawyer included a marital succession provision. If you remarried and later died without a valid will, your surviving spouse could petition for a substantial share of the estate.""

I looked at Miller.

"Is that true?""

He nodded.

"Depending on the trust language and applicable court findings, a spouse might have grounds to challenge certain provisions. But it wouldn't automatically transfer ownership.""

Rachel continued.

"Vanessa believed she could use the marriage, the pregnancy, and the forged paperwork to gain control.""

I felt sick.

"She planned to take everything.""

"Yes.""

"And what about Nora?""

Rachel's face tightened.

"She wanted Nora sent away before the marriage. She knew our daughter was the only person who might recognize the lies.""

I looked at my little girl.

Nora stood quietly beside her mother.

Her white flower-girl dress was wrinkled.

One of her shoes was missing.

I knelt.

"Sweetheart, why didn't you tell me sooner?""

She looked down.

"Vanessa said you would be angry.""

I took her hands.

"I would never be angry with you for telling me the truth.""

"She said you loved her more than Mommy.""

My throat tightened.

"That isn't true.""

Nora's eyes filled.

"She said if I kept talking about Mommy, she'd send me to a boarding school where nobody could find me.""

I pulled her into my arms.

"I'm so sorry.""

Rachel knelt beside us.

"We're going to be together now.""

Nora hugged both of us.

For a few seconds, the noise of the chapel disappeared.

Then Detective Miller cleared his throat.

"There's one more thing we need to discuss.""

I stood.

"What?""

He turned toward Vanessa.

"Ms. Blake, we'd like to ask you about the person who helped you arrange Mrs. Carter's transfer.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"My attorney will handle everything.""

Miller nodded.

"Of course. But we already have the transfer records.""

He placed another photograph on the table.

It showed a private rehabilitation facility.

A man stood outside the entrance, holding a clipboard.

I recognized him immediately.

Daniel Mercer.

But something else caught my attention.

A woman stood beside him.

Her face was partially hidden by sunglasses.

She was wearing a hospital uniform.

I looked closer.

Then I felt my stomach drop.

"Who is that?""

Miller examined the photograph.

"That's one of the nurses who worked at the facility.""

Rachel looked at it.

Her hand began trembling.

"I know her.""

I turned toward my wife.

"Who is she?""

Rachel swallowed.

"Her name is Patricia. She was the nurse who used to bring me food and medication.""

"Did she hurt you?""

Rachel hesitated.

"Not exactly.""

"Then what?""

Rachel looked toward the detective.

"She helped me escape.""

Miller nodded.

"She contacted us three months ago. She said she had information about the accident and the people involved.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Why didn't she come forward earlier?""

Rachel's eyes filled.

"Because Vanessa had something she was afraid to lose.""

"What?""

"My medical records.""

I frowned.

Rachel continued.

"Patricia discovered that someone had been changing my treatment records. They were making it appear that I was mentally incompetent so nobody would believe me if I ever escaped.""

Miller opened another folder.

"Patricia kept copies of the original records. She also gave us a recording.""

"What recording?""

The detective looked toward Vanessa.

"One made inside the rehabilitation facility six years ago.""

Vanessa suddenly stopped moving.

Miller noticed.

"Ms. Blake?""

She didn't answer.

He placed a small tablet on the table.

"Would you like to explain what's on this recording before we play it?""

Vanessa's face had lost all its color.

Rachel took my hand.

"Ethan, you need to hear this.""

Miller pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then a familiar voice filled the chapel.

Vanessa's voice.

"If Rachel ever remembers what happened that night, make sure she never gets the chance to tell Ethan.""

A man's voice answered.

"What about the child?""

Vanessa laughed.

"That's the easiest part.""

I felt Nora grip my hand.

Then the man asked:

"And what happens if Ethan discovers the truth?""

Vanessa's answer made my blood run cold.

"Then we'll have to do to him what we did to his wife.""

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Detective Miller slowly closed the tablet.

Then he turned toward me.

"Mr. Carter, we believe your wife's accident was only the first attempt.""

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?""

He placed a final photograph on the table.

It showed my house.

Taken from across the street.

The date was three nights earlier.

And standing beside my front door was a man I had believed had been out of the country for the past six years.

My father.

The man whose funeral I had attended before Rachel's accident.

The man whose ashes I kept in an urn in my study.

I looked at the photograph.

Then at Rachel.

May you like

She whispered:

"Ethan, your father didn't die either.""
