Chapter 3: The Photograph in the Evidence File
I didn't recognize my brother anymore.
Ryan had been my best friend since childhood.
He had taught me how to ride a bicycle.
He had stood beside me at my first wedding.
He had held Nora in the hospital when she was born.
And now he was telling me he had been the last person to see Rachel before her accident.
I loosened my tie.
"Ryan, tell me the truth.""
He looked toward the chapel doors.
"Not here.""
I stepped closer.
"Six years, Ryan. I've waited six years for an explanation.""
Rachel placed a hand on my arm.
"Please, Ethan. Let him speak.""
Ryan finally faced me.
"Rachel came to my house that night because she had discovered something.""
"What?""
"Vanessa.""
My eyes moved toward the woman still standing near the altar.
She was no longer crying.
She was watching us carefully.
Ryan continued.
"At the time, Vanessa was working for a property management company. She had access to confidential ownership records. She discovered that you had inherited the commercial properties from Dad and that the house was held in a trust.""
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with Rachel?""
"She found documents showing someone had been trying to change the beneficiaries.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
Ryan looked at Vanessa.
"She was using your signature.""
Rachel nodded.
"I found copies of the transfer documents in Vanessa's car. I went to Ryan because I knew he worked in your father's business and could help me understand them.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You're twisting everything.""
Rachel ignored her.
"Ryan told me he would investigate. But before he could, someone followed me.""
I stared at my brother.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Ryan's voice cracked.
"Because I received a phone call from the hospital two hours after the accident. They told me Rachel had been admitted under a false identity. Vanessa had already arranged for her to be transferred to a private rehabilitation facility.""
"Then why did you tell me she was dead?""
"Because Vanessa threatened Nora.""
My daughter tightened her grip on Rachel's hand.
Ryan continued.
"She sent me photographs of Nora outside her daycare. She told me that if I contacted you or revealed Rachel was alive, something would happen to the little girl.""
I felt sick.
"So you let me believe my wife was dead?""
Ryan looked at the floor.
"I thought I could find a way to protect both of them.""
"By lying to me?""
"I was afraid.""
The answer landed harder than I expected.
I stepped away.
Rachel reached into her handbag.
"There's something else.""
She removed a sealed evidence envelope.
The label read:
COLUMBUS POLICE DEPARTMENT — VEHICLE TAMPERING INVESTIGATION.
I looked at her.
"Where did you get this?""
"Ryan.""
My brother nodded.
"After the crash, I contacted a detective I knew. He recovered some surveillance footage from a nearby business. It showed someone approaching Rachel's car shortly before she left.""
Rachel placed the envelope in my hands.
"Look at the photograph.""
I opened it.
Inside was a grainy black-and-white image.
A man stood beside Rachel's parked vehicle.
He wore a hooded jacket and held a small object near the driver's side.
The photograph wasn't clear enough to show his entire face.
But I recognized the posture.
The shoulders.
The distinctive watch on his left wrist.
My breath caught.
It was my father-in-law's old watch.
The one Ryan had inherited after Dad died.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
"Ryan?""
He looked at his wrist.
His face turned pale.
The watch was there.
Exactly the same design.
"That's your watch," I whispered.
Ryan immediately removed it.
"Ethan, listen—"
I held up the photograph.
"You're the person in this picture?""
He didn't answer.
Vanessa suddenly rushed toward us.
"STOP THIS!""
Rachel raised her cane.
"Don't come any closer.""
Vanessa pointed at Ryan.
"Tell him what happened after you found me at the hospital!""
Ryan's expression hardened.
"Shut up, Vanessa.""
"Tell him who paid for Rachel's private treatment!""
"Stop!""
"Tell him whose name was on the bank transfers!""
I turned toward my brother.
"What bank transfers?""
Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.
Then he finally admitted something that made the entire room go quiet.
"I paid for Rachel's treatment.""
I stared at him.
"With what money?""
He looked at Vanessa.
"Money she gave me.""
I felt something break inside my chest.
"You took money from the woman who tried to kill your sister-in-law?""
"I didn't know what she had done at first!""
Rachel shook her head.
"Ryan, you knew enough.""
He turned toward her.
"I was trying to get you out of there!""
Vanessa laughed.
"Such a noble story.""
Ryan stepped toward her.
"You told me Rachel was dead when I first arrived at the hospital. You told me the doctors couldn't save her. I believed you until I saw her breathing.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Ryan continued.
"Then you offered me money to keep quiet. You said Ethan would never forgive me for letting Rachel drive away that night.""
I looked at him.
"Why would I blame you?""
Ryan's eyes filled.
"Because we argued. Rachel and I had a terrible argument before she left.""
Rachel lowered her eyes.
"What did you argue about?""
Ryan swallowed.
"She wanted to take Nora and leave Ethan.""
I froze.
"What?""
Rachel looked directly at me.
"I was going to tell you that Vanessa had been threatening me. I wanted to leave the house with Nora until we could figure out what was happening.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I found something else.""
She reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing beside a man outside a bank.
The man's face was visible.
My blood ran cold.
I knew him.
He was Daniel Mercer, the attorney who had handled my father's estate.
The same attorney who had prepared the property documents Vanessa wanted me to sign.
I looked at Rachel.
"What's this?""
"That photograph was taken two days before my accident. Vanessa was meeting Daniel to arrange the transfer of your father's properties.""
"How much?""
Rachel shook her head.
"All of them.""
My phone began vibrating.
An unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice spoke urgently.
"Mr. Carter? This is Detective Miller. We need you to come to the station immediately.""
I looked toward Rachel.
"Why?""
There was a pause.
"Because we've reopened your first wife's accident investigation.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Did you find something?""
"We recovered additional evidence from the original case file. Something that was deliberately withheld from the prosecution.""
"What evidence?""
The detective lowered his voice.
"Mr. Carter, the person who tampered with your wife's vehicle wasn't working alone.""
I glanced at Ryan.
Then at Vanessa.
"Who was helping him?""
The detective took a breath.
"Your brother wasn't the only person at the scene that night.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Who else?""
"Someone who had a key to your house, access to your daughter's school records, and a reason to make sure your wife never came home.""
The line went silent for a moment.
Then Detective Miller said five words that made me look toward my mother.
"Your mother was also involved.""
I slowly turned.
Margaret was standing near the front pew.
May you like
Her handbag slipped from her fingers.
And for the first time that afternoon, my mother looked terrified.
