Chapter 14: The Price of Bringing My Family Home
"Find my daughter!""
My voice echoed through the farmhouse.
Detective Miller immediately called his team.
Thomas grabbed his phone.
Rachel began pacing.
"No. No, no, no.""
I caught her shoulders.
"Rachel, look at me.""
She was crying.
"She promised me she wouldn't let Vanessa near Nora.""
I held her tighter.
"We're getting her back.""
Miller approached.
"We're tracking Vanessa's vehicle. We need to know where Nora was last seen.""
I called the family friend who had been watching her.
She answered immediately.
"Ethan?""
"Where's Nora?""
There was silence.
Then she began crying.
"I'm so sorry. A woman came to the door. She said you had been in an accident and needed Nora immediately.""
My blood ran cold.
"What woman?""
"She showed me your photograph. She knew your address. She said she was a police officer.""
"Did you let her take Nora?""
"I thought it was an emergency!""
Rachel covered her mouth.
I forced myself to remain calm.
"Did you see the car?""
"Yes. A black SUV.""
Miller immediately looked at his phone.
"Vanessa.""
Thomas stepped forward.
"She's taking Nora to William.""
I turned toward him.
"How do you know?""
"Because William has always believed children are the easiest way to control their parents.""
I felt something break inside me.
For six years, I had believed my daughter was safe.
Now the woman I had almost married had taken her.
I turned toward James.
"You said you knew where the money was.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then use it. Call William. Tell him I'll give him everything if he returns Nora.""
James looked at me.
"That's exactly what he wants.""
"I don't care!""
Rachel grabbed my hand.
"Ethan, please.""
I looked at her.
She was trembling.
"Our daughter needs us to think clearly.""
I closed my eyes.
Then I took a breath.
Miller approached.
"We have a possible location. A warehouse near the old Carter estate.""
Thomas immediately recognized the address.
"It's the original family storage building.""
"Can you get us inside?""
Thomas nodded.
"There's an underground entrance.""
Miller looked at me.
"We're going to secure the building. Nobody moves until the officers give the signal.""
But before we could leave, James's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
"William?""
He placed the call on speaker.
My grandfather's voice filled the room.
"James. I see you've finally decided to return.""
James clenched his jaw.
"Where is the child?""
William laughed.
"Safe.""
I stepped forward.
"Let me speak to my daughter!""
There was a pause.
Then Nora's voice came through.
"Daddy?""
My knees nearly buckled.
"Sweetheart! Are you okay?""
"I'm scared.""
Rachel began crying.
"Nora, baby, Mommy is here.""
A small sob came through the phone.
"Mommy?""
"Yes, sweetheart. We're coming.""
William interrupted.
"Enough.""
I clenched my fists.
"What do you want?""
"The blue ledger. The original birth certificate. And the account access.""
James shook his head.
"You're asking for things that don't belong to you.""
William laughed.
"Everything belongs to me.""
I stepped closer to the phone.
"Take whatever you want. Just let Nora go.""
"Bring the documents to the warehouse.""
"When?""
"Midnight.""
"And if I don't?""
William's voice became cold.
"Then you'll discover how quickly a family can lose another daughter.""
The call ended.
Rachel collapsed into a chair.
I knelt beside her.
"We're getting her back.""
She nodded.
Then she looked at Thomas.
"Why does William hate Ethan so much?""
Thomas sat down.
"Because Ethan represents everything William couldn't control.""
He looked at me.
"When you were born, Evelyn refused to give William the right to control you. Thomas—"
He stopped himself.
Then corrected his words.
"I refused to let him decide what happened to you.""
I looked at James.
He nodded.
"William wanted me out of the picture because he believed my son would eventually inherit the Hayes family assets as well as the Carter properties.""
I frowned.
"What Hayes assets?""
James opened his notebook.
"The original eighteen-million-dollar account wasn't created by William alone. Half of it came from Evelyn's inheritance.""
Rachel looked surprised.
"So William has been trying to steal his own daughter's money?""
James nodded.
"Exactly.""
I stared at him.
"Then why does he need me?""
"Because the original agreement names you as the final beneficiary. Without your authorization, he cannot legally claim the account.""
Suddenly, I understood.
The wedding wasn't simply about getting my properties.
It was about making me sign away the last piece of an inheritance that William had never truly owned.
Miller checked his watch.
"Twenty minutes until midnight.""
We drove toward the warehouse.
Police vehicles followed at a distance.
The rain had stopped, leaving the roads slick beneath the streetlights.
When we arrived, the building was dark except for one illuminated window.
Miller raised his hand.
The officers moved into position.
Thomas showed us the underground entrance.
We descended a narrow staircase.
At the bottom, a steel door stood slightly open.
A child's voice came from inside.
"Daddy?""
I nearly ran.
Miller grabbed my shoulder.
"Wait.""
A red light blinked above the doorway.
"There's a camera.""
Thomas looked up.
Then he whispered:
"William knows we're here.""
A speaker crackled.
My grandfather's voice filled the corridor.
"Come in, Ethan.""
The door opened.
Inside, Nora sat on a wooden chair.
Her hands were free.
Vanessa stood behind her.
And beside Vanessa was William Carter.
My grandfather smiled.
"Welcome home, grandson.""
I stepped inside.
"Let Nora go.""
William looked at the documents in my hand.
"First, the ledger.""
I placed it on the table.
"Now let her go.""
He opened it and smiled.
Then he picked up the original birth certificate.
"Wonderful.""
He looked at James.
"Now we can finally finish what we started.""
James stepped forward.
"William, it's over.""
My grandfather laughed.
"Not quite.""
He removed a small document from his jacket.
Then he placed it in front of me.
It was a declaration of inheritance.
My signature line was blank.
"Sign this, Ethan. And your daughter walks out of here.""
I looked at Nora.
She was crying silently.
Then she shook her head.
"Daddy, don't sign.""
Vanessa grabbed her shoulder.
"Be quiet!""
I stepped forward.
"Don't touch my daughter!""
William raised one hand.
"Careful, Ethan.""
I looked down at the document.
Then I noticed something.
The signature line wasn't the only blank space.
There was another section beneath it.
A declaration acknowledging that I had knowingly participated in the transfer of the Carter estate.
If I signed, William could claim I had voluntarily surrendered everything.
I looked at my grandfather.
"You really think I'll sign this?""
William leaned forward.
"I think you'll do anything for that little girl.""
He was right.
But he had forgotten something.
I wasn't the only person in the room who knew how to keep a secret.
Rachel stepped out from behind the officers.
She held up her phone.
"William, before Ethan signs anything, you should listen to this.""
His smile disappeared.
Rachel pressed play.
A recording filled the warehouse.
It was Vanessa's voice.
"Once the little girl is gone, Ethan will have no choice but to sign.""
Then William's voice answered.
"Make sure she never comes back.""
My grandfather stared at the phone.
Detective Miller stepped into the doorway.
"William Carter, you're under arrest.""
For the first time, the old man looked afraid.
But he didn't surrender.
He reached toward Nora.
May you like
And my daughter suddenly screamed:
"DADDY! LOOK AT HIS HAND!""
