Chapter 2: The Woman I Buried
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Rachel stood beneath the chapel entrance, one hand gripping a silver cane.
Her hair was shorter than I remembered.
Her face was thinner.
A pale scar ran from her left temple toward her cheek.
But it was her.
The woman I had married.
The woman who had held our newborn daughter against her chest.
The woman whose supposed death had destroyed me.
I took one step toward her.
"Rachel?""
Her lips trembled.
"Hello, Ethan.""
I crossed the chapel before anyone could stop me.
When I reached her, I hesitated.
I was terrified that touching her would somehow make her disappear.
Then I placed my hands on her shoulders.
"You're alive.""
She closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
I pulled her into my arms.
She began crying against my chest.
For six years, I had visited her grave every anniversary.
For six years, I had told Nora that her mother was watching over her.
For six years, I had believed I was the only parent left to protect our daughter.
And now Rachel was standing in front of me.
Alive.
Behind us, someone dropped a glass.
My mother whispered, "This is impossible.""
Rachel pulled away.
"Margaret, you knew I was alive.""
My mother went completely still.
I turned toward her.
"What?""
Margaret shook her head.
"Don't listen to her, Ethan. She's confused.""
Rachel slowly reached into her handbag.
"Then explain this.""
She handed me a folded photograph.
It showed Rachel sitting in a wheelchair outside a rehabilitation facility.
A date was printed in the bottom corner.
Six years earlier.
Standing beside her was Vanessa.
And beside Vanessa was Ryan.
My younger brother.
I looked at the photograph.
Then at Ryan.
"Why were you there?""
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
"It's complicated.""
"Then start explaining.""
Vanessa suddenly shouted from the altar.
"THAT WOMAN IS A LIAR!""
Rachel turned toward her.
"You told me Ethan would never know.""
Vanessa stepped backward.
"You're sick. You need psychiatric help.""
Rachel lifted her cane.
"You told me I would never see my daughter again.""
Nora broke away from my side.
"Mommy!""
Rachel dropped her handbag and opened her arms.
Nora ran straight into them.
The sound Rachel made was almost unbearable.
She sank to her knees, holding our daughter tightly.
"My baby," she sobbed.
"My beautiful baby.""
Nora buried her face in her mother's shoulder.
"I knew you'd come back.""
Rachel kissed her hair.
"I'm sorry it took so long.""
I watched them embrace.
Then I noticed something.
Rachel's left hand was shaking violently.
A medical bracelet was still wrapped around her wrist.
I crouched beside them.
"What happened to you?""
Rachel looked up.
"Vanessa happened.""
My bride immediately started shouting.
"She's fabricating everything! Ethan, you know how unstable she was before the accident!""
I turned toward Vanessa.
"Stop talking.""
She froze.
For the first time in months, she didn't have an answer ready.
Rachel slowly stood.
"I need you to understand something. The accident wasn't an accident.""
My stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?""
She looked toward Ryan.
"He knows.""
I turned.
"Ryan?""
My brother looked like a man standing at the edge of a cliff.
He finally spoke.
"Six years ago, Rachel called me from the hospital.""
I stared at him.
"You told me she died at the scene.""
"I know.""
"You attended her funeral.""
"I know.""
"You stood beside me while I cried over an empty coffin?""
His eyes filled.
"I'm sorry.""
I grabbed the front of his suit.
"WHY?""
Ryan didn't fight back.
"Because I was trying to keep her alive.""
I released him.
Rachel stepped forward.
"Let him explain, Ethan.""
Ryan took a shaky breath.
"After the accident, Rachel was taken to St. Catherine's Medical Center. She had serious injuries, but she was conscious. She remembered someone following her car.""
"Who?""
"She didn't know at first.""
Ryan looked at Vanessa.
"Then she saw her.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"This is ridiculous.""
Ryan continued.
"Vanessa was at the hospital that night. She told the doctors she was Rachel's emergency contact. She brought paperwork claiming you had authorized her to make medical decisions.""
I stared at him.
"Why would the hospital accept that?""
"Because she had forged your signature.""
Rachel nodded.
"She told everyone I had suffered severe brain damage. She said I was confused and dangerous.""
My throat tightened.
"Why didn't you call me?""
"I tried.""
Rachel opened her handbag again.
This time, she removed a thick bundle of envelopes.
Every envelope had my name written on it.
Ethan.
Some were yellowed with age.
Others had been returned unopened.
"I sent these from three different facilities," she said.
"Every single one came back.""
I picked up the first envelope.
The postmark was from six years ago.
Inside was a photograph of Rachel holding a handwritten note.
Ethan, I'm alive. Please find me. Vanessa is keeping me away from Nora.
My knees weakened.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I did.""
She looked at me with exhausted eyes.
"Every chance I got.""
Vanessa suddenly clapped her hands.
"Enough! This is a circus!""
She grabbed the microphone from the altar.
"Everyone, this woman has a history of emotional instability. She disappeared years ago, and now she's returned to destroy my marriage!""
Rachel looked at her.
"You don't have to convince these people. They can see what you've done.""
Vanessa turned toward the guests.
"Ethan, she's trying to take your money. Your house. Your daughter.""
I looked at her wedding dress.
The fake pregnancy.
The secret video.
The forged documents.
"Is that why you pretended to be pregnant?""
Vanessa's face tightened.
She didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Was there ever a baby?""
She lowered her voice.
"I wanted us to have a family.""
"We already had one.""
She looked toward Nora.
"That child never accepted me.""
Rachel immediately moved in front of our daughter.
"Because you never wanted to be her mother.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
For a moment, I saw something cold behind her eyes.
Then she looked directly at me.
"You have no idea what Rachel did before the accident.""
I frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Ask your brother why Rachel was driving away from his house that night.""
I turned toward Ryan.
He looked down.
Rachel's grip tightened around her cane.
"Don't listen to her.""
But Vanessa continued.
"Ask him why he had blood on his shirt when he came to the hospital.""
The chapel fell silent again.
I looked at my brother.
"Ryan?""
He closed his eyes.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"Because I was the last person to see Rachel before the crash.""
