Chapter 5: The Emergency Call

The chapel had emptied considerably by the time Detective Miller arrived.

Some guests had already left.

Others stood outside, whispering into their phones.

The wedding was over.

My marriage to Vanessa had never legally begun.

But the truth about my family was only beginning to surface.

Detective Miller entered with another officer.

He was in his late forties, with silver hair and a tired expression.

"Ethan Carter?""

I nodded.

"Detective Miller.""

He looked toward Rachel.

"Mrs. Carter, it's good to finally meet you.""

Rachel gripped her cane.

"Did you find the recording?""

He nodded.

"Yes. And I think everyone needs to hear it.""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"This is ridiculous. You can't play confidential police recordings in a church.""

Miller looked at her.

"You're welcome to leave, Ms. Blake.""

She folded her arms.

"I am not going anywhere.""

"Then stay quiet.""

He placed a small digital recorder on a nearby table.

My mother sat down.

Ryan stood beside the wall.

Nora held Rachel's hand.

Miller pressed play.

A woman's voice filled the room.

"Emergency services. What's your location?""

Then my mother's voice.

"My daughter-in-law has been in an accident. She's unconscious.""

The dispatcher asked for the location.

Margaret gave the address.

Then came the question.

"Is anyone with the injured woman?""

My mother's answer was immediate.

"No.""

Rachel covered her mouth.

I stared at Margaret.

The recording continued.

"Ma'am, have you checked whether she's breathing?""

A pause.

Then my mother said:

"I don't think she is.""

My blood turned cold.

The dispatcher instructed her to begin checking for signs of life.

But Margaret's next words made my stomach twist.

"There's no point. She's gone.""

Detective Miller stopped the recording.

Nobody moved.

I looked at my mother.

"You told them she was dead?""

Margaret began crying.

"Vanessa told me she was already gone.""

Rachel's voice shook.

"But I was breathing.""

Margaret lowered her eyes.

Miller opened a folder.

"According to the original paramedic report, Mrs. Carter was found conscious when the ambulance arrived. She had suffered serious injuries, but she was alive.""

I looked at Rachel.

She nodded.

"I remember the ambulance. I remember someone holding my hand. But I couldn't speak.""

Miller continued.

"There's another part of the recording.""

He pressed play again.

The dispatcher asked:

"Can you identify the other vehicle involved?""

My mother's voice became quieter.

"No. There was no other vehicle.""

Then a second voice could be heard in the background.

A man's voice.

"Tell them she lost control. Nothing else.""

I turned toward Ryan.

He looked horrified.

"That's not me," he whispered.

Miller paused the recording.

"Correct. We compared the voice against several known recordings.""

He looked at Margaret.

"Do you recognize the man?""

My mother began shaking.

"Please don't.""

Miller waited.

Finally, she whispered:

"Daniel Mercer.""

The estate attorney.

The man in the photograph.

The man who had been helping Vanessa transfer my father's properties.

I clenched my fists.

"Why was he there?""

Margaret stared at the floor.

"He came with Vanessa.""

Rachel closed her eyes.

"I knew it.""

I turned toward her.

"What do you mean?""

Rachel slowly sat down.

"That night, I had an argument with Vanessa at the house. I told her I had discovered the forged documents. She said I was making a mistake.""

Rachel took a shaky breath.

"Then Daniel arrived. They both tried to convince me to sign an agreement.""

"What agreement?""

"One that would give Vanessa control over the properties if anything happened to you.""

I stared at her.

"Why would I be in danger?""

Rachel looked at me.

"Because Vanessa knew your father had placed everything in a protected trust. She couldn't access it without your cooperation.""

Ryan stepped forward.

"She needed Ethan to marry her first. That's why she rushed the wedding.""

I looked at him.

"And the pregnancy?""

Rachel answered.

"It was part of the plan. Vanessa wanted everyone to believe she was carrying your child. That would make her look like the natural mother of Nora's new sibling and strengthen her position in the family.""

I remembered the nursery.

The tiny shoes.

The baby names.

The nights I had spent with my hand against Vanessa's belly.

I felt physically sick.

Miller closed his folder.

"We're going to need formal statements from everyone.""

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

"Wonderful. Arrest me for a fake pregnancy. See how far that gets you.""

Miller turned toward her.

"That's not why we're here.""

He pulled out another document.

"Your name appears on several fraudulent financial transactions. We also have evidence connecting you to the unauthorized transfer of medical records and the falsification of Mrs. Carter's identity.""

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"I have a lawyer.""

"Good. You'll need one.""

Then she looked at me.

"Ethan, don't let them turn you against me.""

I stared at her.

"You did that yourself.""

She stepped closer.

"Think about everything we've shared.""

I almost laughed.

"You told my daughter her mother was dead.""

Vanessa's eyes hardened.

"Rachel was never supposed to come back.""

Rachel stood.

"Why? Because I knew about the car?""

Vanessa didn't respond.

Instead, she looked toward my mother.

"Margaret, tell them what Rachel was doing before the accident.""

My mother shook her head.

"Don't involve me anymore.""

Vanessa's voice became sharp.

"Tell them about the insurance policy.""

I turned.

"What insurance policy?""

Margaret looked terrified.

Rachel gripped her cane.

"Vanessa.""

But the woman I had nearly married was already smiling.

"Your first wife had a life insurance policy, Ethan. A very large one.""

I stared at her.

"What does that have to do with anything?""

Vanessa tilted her head.

"Ask your mother who was named as the beneficiary.""

Margaret began crying harder.

Miller looked at her.

"Mrs. Carter?""

My mother whispered:

"Me.""

I felt the room spin.

"You were the beneficiary of Rachel's life insurance?""

Margaret nodded.

Then Detective Miller pulled another sheet from his folder.

"There's something more troubling.""

He placed it on the table.

The policy had been changed six weeks before the accident.

May you like

And the signature authorizing the change wasn't Rachel's.

It was mine.
