Chapter 4: The Date on the Door
“Tomorrow's date,” Agent Dana Brooks repeated, staring at the photograph on my phone.
Marcus Lee moved closer to the screen.
“Could be a scheduled transfer. Could be a warning. Could be someone deliberately trying to frighten us.””
“Or it could mean someone is still using that property,” I said.
Dana looked at the image again. Her missing sister stood beside Margaret Prescott, thinner than the woman in the photographs Dana had carried for seven years. Rachel's hair was cropped short, and her expression was difficult to read.
But she was alive in that photograph.
That alone changed everything.
“Marcus, send the image to the new investigative team,” Dana ordered.
“Have them verify the date, identify the property, and check for any current ownership or activity. I don't want anyone approaching the estate alone.””
Marcus nodded and stepped into the corridor.
I turned toward Emily.
“Sweetheart, do you recognize that doorway?””
She studied the photograph, squinting through her swollen eye.
“It's the guesthouse where Ethan locked me up. But the picture looks older than the room I saw.””
“What do you mean?””
“The wallpaper was different. There were no curtains when I was there. And the door had been replaced.””
Dana leaned forward.
“Did you see anything else unusual inside?””
Emily hesitated.
“There's a room behind the pantry. Ethan told me it was a storage closet. But one night, I heard someone knocking from inside.””
The air seemed to leave the room.
“How many knocks?”” Dana asked.
“Three. Then a pause. Then three more.””
“What did you do?””
“I called for help. Ethan came into the hallway and told me the pipes were making noise.””
Emily's fingers tightened around the blanket.
“But pipes don't whisper your name, Mom.””
I felt my stomach clench.
“What name did you hear?””
“Claire.””
Dana stood abruptly.
“We need to search that building.””
“Not without a warrant and a coordinated team,” Marcus called from the doorway. He had returned with his phone in his hand.
“The property records show the guesthouse is part of the Prescott estate. But here's the problem.””
He placed a tablet on the bedside table.
A map showed a sprawling property outside Charlotte, bordered by wooded land and an old service road. The estate included the main residence, several outbuildings, and a separate structure marked as a former caretaker's cottage.
“According to the county records, the cottage was demolished six years ago,” Marcus explained.
“But satellite imagery from last month shows a roof where the building supposedly stood.””
“Can we confirm what's inside?”” I asked.
“Not yet.””
Dana looked at me.
“Colonel Hart, I'm going to be blunt. Your daughter is a witness, and you're her mother. That makes this personal for both of you. I need you to let my team handle the investigation.””
“I have no intention of interfering with your evidence collection.””
“Good. But if you go anywhere near that property without authorization, you could compromise the case.””
I held her gaze.
“I understand the distinction between protecting my daughter and conducting an investigation.””
She seemed to consider that before nodding.
Then Emily spoke.
“There's something else I remember.””
We turned toward her.
“When I was inside the guesthouse, Ethan came in carrying a metal box. He opened it on the kitchen table. There were passports inside.””
“Whose passports?”” Marcus asked.
“I saw Claire's name on one. Another had a different woman's picture. Ethan closed the box before I could see the name.””
Dana's face hardened.
“Did he take the box when you escaped?””
“I don't know. But the next morning, I heard him arguing with his mother.””
Emily closed her eyes, trying to remember.
“Margaret said, ‘You promised me the last one would be the last one.’ Ethan said, ‘Then stop making me clean up your mistakes.’”
Nobody spoke.
The hospital monitor continued its steady rhythm.
I wanted to ask a hundred questions, but Emily was exhausted. Her bruises were worsening, and the doctor had already warned us that she might have a concussion.
I took her hand.
“You don't need to remember everything tonight. Rest.””
She nodded reluctantly.
As I adjusted her blanket, my phone rang again.
The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.
Marcus immediately gestured for me to put it on speaker.
“Colonel Hart,” I answered.
A woman's voice emerged, barely above a whisper.
“Is Emily there?””
“Who is this?””
“My name is Claire Bennett.””
Every person in the room froze.
Dana grabbed the edge of the table.
“Claire? This is Special Agent Dana Brooks. Where are you?””
The woman ignored her.
“Please listen to me. The Prescotts have found out about the photograph. They know someone has been talking.””
“How are you alive?”” I asked.
A shaky breath came through the phone.
“I can't explain everything over a call.””
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere they can't reach me. Not yet.””
Dana leaned toward the phone.
“Claire, do you know what happened to my sister?””
Silence.
Then the woman spoke.
“Rachel is alive.””
Dana covered her mouth.
A tear slipped down her cheek, but her voice remained steady.
“Tell me where she is.””
“I can't. Not until I know you haven't been followed.””
“We can protect you.””
“No,” Claire said sharply.
“You can try. That's not the same thing.””
I understood that fear. People who had spent years being hunted didn't trust promises simply because they came from someone wearing a badge.
“Claire,” I said, “my daughter is in a hospital bed because she found evidence in Ethan's office. If you know what happened to her, you owe her the truth.””
“I know.””
“Then tell us one thing we can verify.””
Claire paused.
“Ask Emily what Ethan kept beneath the floorboards in the guesthouse kitchen.””
Emily sat up so quickly that she winced.
“The metal box,” she whispered.
“He kept it under the loose board beside the pantry.””
Claire heard her.
“Yes. That's where he kept the passports before he moved them.””
Marcus began writing.
“Claire, we need to know whether anyone is in immediate danger.””
“I don't know,” she replied.
“But tomorrow night, the Prescotts are moving someone. If they move her, you'll never find her.””
“Who?”” Dana demanded.
The answer came in a whisper.
“Rachel.””
Then a man's voice sounded in the background.
“Claire? Who are you talking to?””
The line went dead.
Dana stared at the phone, her face drained of color.
Marcus was already calling the investigative team.
I looked at the photograph again, at the date on the guesthouse door.
Tomorrow.
Whatever the Prescotts were planning, we had less than twenty-four hours to understand it.
Then Emily grabbed my wrist.
“Mom, there's something I forgot to tell you.””
I leaned close.
“When Ethan found me copying the files, he didn't just take my phone.””
“What else did he do?””
“He told me the reason Claire disappeared.””
May you like
Emily's voice trembled.
“He said his first wife was supposed to be dead.””
