Chapter 12: The Price of the Truth

For one terrible second, I forgot how to breathe.

The photograph showed Emily's hospital room exactly as I had left it. The blanket was folded back, the bedside monitor was dark, and the security officer who had been stationed outside the door was nowhere in sight.

I called the hospital.

No answer.

I tried again.

Still nothing.

“Victoria,” Dana said sharply, “look at me.””

I forced myself to meet her eyes.

“Emily's gone.””

Her expression changed, but she didn't panic.

“Marcus, contact hospital security and the federal team. Confirm her location before we assume anything.””

Marcus immediately moved behind the machinery, speaking into his radio.

Across the warehouse, Cross still held Rachel against him.

“Now you understand,” he said.

“This is what happens when people refuse to listen.””

I stared at him.

“If you've touched my daughter—”

“Then what?”” he interrupted.

“You'll arrest me? Expose me? Destroy my reputation? I've spent years making sure that every person who matters owes me something.””

He pushed Rachel forward.

“She was supposed to disappear quietly. Claire was supposed to disappear quietly. Daniel was supposed to stop asking questions.””

His eyes met mine.

“But all of you kept making noise.””

Dana's voice was dangerously calm.

“Samuel, release Rachel. Whatever you think you've accomplished, it's over.””

Cross laughed.

“You still believe in procedure. That's your problem.””

He reached into his coat and produced a folded document.

“Rachel, tell them what happens if the Prescott Foundation's financial records become public.””

Rachel looked at Dana.

Then at me.

“The money doesn't just belong to the Prescotts,” she said.

“Some of it came from government contracts. Some went through shell companies. But a portion was used to pay people who were supposed to investigate the network.””

“Who received the payments?”” Dana asked.

“Officials. Consultants. Private security contractors. People who could make records disappear.””

“And Cross?””

Rachel's expression hardened.

“He organized the transfers.””

Cross pressed the object harder against her side.

“That's enough.””

But Rachel had already begun speaking.

“Margaret Prescott didn't just hide the disappearances. She kept records of everyone who helped her. She used those records to control them.””

“Where are those records?”” I asked.

“In a private archive.””

“Where?””

Rachel looked at Cross.

“Tell her, Sam.””

He shook his head.

“Don't.””

“Tell her what you did with Daniel's files.””

Cross's face twisted.

“I told you to be quiet!””

Rachel flinched, but she continued.

“Daniel found the first archive. He discovered that Cross had been using confidential information to pressure contractors and government officials. Daniel copied the files and planned to hand them over to an independent investigator.””

I remembered the last weeks of my husband's life. His late nights. The calls he took outside. The way he had once stopped in the middle of dinner to ask whether I trusted the people who had access to my personnel records.

I had thought he was worried about work.

He had been afraid.

“What happened the night of the accident?”” I asked.

Rachel swallowed.

“Cross learned that Daniel had made a copy. He arranged a meeting with a contractor who had access to Daniel's travel schedule. After Daniel left the meeting, someone followed his car.””

“Did you see it happen?””

“No. But I heard the recording.””

She looked toward the device in her hand.

“Cross admitted it to Margaret in a phone call. He said the accident was supposed to look ordinary.””

My vision narrowed.

I wanted to cross the warehouse and tear the truth out of him.

Instead, I forced myself to stay still.

“Where is the recording?””

“On this device. And in another location.””

Cross suddenly shoved Rachel toward the machinery.

Dana moved, but he raised his weapon.

“Stop!””

Everyone froze.

Then Marcus's voice came through the radio.

“Victoria, we have confirmation. Emily is no longer in the hospital, but she wasn't taken by Cross's people.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

“The hospital's internal cameras show that a woman wearing a nurse's uniform escorted Emily through a staff exit. Emily was conscious and walking. She appeared to recognize the woman.””

My heart hammered.

“Who was the woman?””

Marcus looked toward Dana.

“Claire Bennett.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Cross's expression changed.

“No,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“You didn't know?””

He shook his head, his face suddenly drained of color.

“Claire wouldn't risk it.””

Dana seized the opening.

“Sam, lower the weapon.””

He looked at Rachel, then at the agents surrounding him.

His confidence was collapsing.

“You don't understand,” he said.

“Margaret has the original archive. She has copies of everything. If she releases those files, half the people in this room will be destroyed.””

“Then let the evidence be examined,” Dana replied.

“If you have a defense, you can present it through the proper channels.””

Cross laughed bitterly.

“You think she'll let me live long enough to testify?””

The words hung in the air.

He knew something we didn't.

“Where is Margaret?”” I demanded.

Cross's eyes shifted toward the loading door.

“She was supposed to meet me here.””

“Why?””

“To collect Rachel.””

Dana's voice hardened.

“And where is she now?””

Cross said nothing.

Then a phone rang somewhere inside the warehouse.

Everyone turned toward the sound.

It was coming from the pocket of Rachel's oversized jacket.

She reached slowly inside and pulled out a phone.

The screen displayed a video call.

Margaret Prescott appeared on the screen, sitting in the back of a moving vehicle. Her expression was composed, almost bored.

“Sam,” she said, “you've made a mess of things.””

Cross stared at her.

“You said you'd handle Claire.””

“I did.””

“You said Emily was secure.””

“She was. Until you decided to bring everyone together in one convenient location.””

Dana stepped forward.

“Margaret Prescott, this is Special Agent Dana Brooks. Your conversation is being recorded.””

Margaret smiled.

“Of course it is.””

She turned the phone slightly.

Behind her sat Emily.

Her hands were free, and she appeared uninjured beyond the bruises she had already suffered. Claire sat beside her, holding a phone of her own.

Emily looked directly into the camera.

“Mom, I'm okay.””

I nearly collapsed with relief.

“Emily, where are you?””

“I don't know. Claire brought me here before the hospital room was compromised. She said the people watching the building weren't working for the hospital.””

Margaret leaned into view.

“How touching. Mother and daughter reunited through a telephone.””

“Let her go,” I said.

“Gladly. All I want is the memory card and every copy of the files.””

“You'll get nothing.””

Margaret sighed.

“Then your daughter will remain my guest until we reach an understanding.””

Emily lifted her chin.

“You can't keep me. Everyone knows what you've done.””

Margaret's expression sharpened.

“Do they? Or do they know what a frightened, unstable woman has been telling them?””

Emily looked at the camera.

“My name is Emily Prescott Hart. My husband locked me inside a guesthouse and assaulted me. His family concealed evidence of two missing women. And now his mother is threatening me on a recorded call.””

Margaret slapped her.

The sound cracked through the speaker.

I surged forward, but Dana caught my arm.

“Victoria, wait!””

On the screen, Emily struggled to stay upright.

Margaret adjusted her sleeve.

“You see?”” she said.

“Always emotional.””

But the camera was still recording.

And this time, there were witnesses.

Dana raised her phone.

“Margaret, you have just provided additional evidence of coercion and assault. We know your vehicle's location is being traced.””

Margaret glanced toward the window.

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

Then she smiled again.

“You're too late.””

She lifted a second phone and displayed a photograph.

It showed a locked steel cabinet inside a concrete room.

“The original archive is here,” she said.

“Every record, every payment, every name. At midnight, the contents will be destroyed unless I receive immunity and safe passage out of the country.””

Dana's expression remained steady.

“You won't receive immunity in exchange for destroying evidence.””

“Then the evidence dies with me.””

She ended the call.

For a moment, the warehouse was silent.

Then Marcus received a message through his secure device.

He read it, and his face changed.

“Dana, we've located the vehicle. It's heading toward an abandoned industrial property outside Charlotte.””

“Where?””

Marcus showed her the map.

Dana stared at it.

“That property belongs to Prescott Development Group.””

Rachel gripped the recording device.

“I know that building,” she whispered.

“What's inside?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“The original archive.””

Then she swallowed.

“And the person Margaret has been keeping there for seven years.””

Dana's face went pale.

“Who?””

Rachel's answer came in a broken whisper.

“My sister.””

But the message that followed on Marcus's device changed everything.

The location had been flagged for demolition.

Scheduled for midnight.

And the demolition order had been authorized under Samuel Cross's credentials.
