Chapter 13: The Woman Beneath the Prescott Estate

“Cancel the demolition order,” Agent Dana Brooks demanded.

Marcus was already on the phone, contacting the local authorities and the emergency response team. Across the warehouse, Samuel Cross stood between two federal agents, his hands cuffed behind his back. His expensive suit was soaked from the rain, and the confidence that had carried him through years of corruption had finally begun to crumble.

“You can't stop it,” Cross said.

“The order has already been processed.””

Dana turned toward him.

“Then tell us who authorized it.””

Cross laughed bitterly.

“You have my credentials. You have the records. You have everything you need to make me the villain.””

“You made yourself the villain.””

“No,” he snapped.

“I made myself useful. There's a difference.””

I barely heard their argument.

My daughter was somewhere in Margaret Prescott's custody, and Rachel Brooks might have been trapped inside a building scheduled to be demolished at midnight.

I approached Rachel.

“Tell me everything you know about that property.””

She clutched the recording device against her chest.

“It's an old industrial facility the Prescotts acquired through a subsidiary company. They used it for storage, but there are underground rooms beneath the eastern section.””

“How do you know?””

“Margaret took me there seven years ago. She wanted me to identify the documents I'd copied from the Prescott Foundation.””

Rachel swallowed.

“She told me if I cooperated, I could go home. When I refused, she said my family would never see me again.””

Dana stepped closer.

“Rachel, did you see Claire there?””

“Yes. Not every day, but I saw her twice. The last time was about six months ago.””

My heart lurched.

“Claire told us Rachel was alive,” I said.

“Why would she hide the fact that she knew where you were?””

“Because she didn't know exactly where I was being held. Margaret moved me between locations. Claire could contact me through intermediaries, but every attempt to escape failed.””

“Until today?””

Rachel nodded.

“Claire found a way to get me out of the estate's surveillance network. She sent the photograph, then contacted Dana.””

Dana's eyes filled with tears.

“Why didn't you come to me sooner?””

Rachel looked at her sister.

“Because I thought you might be compromised.””

The words hurt Dana, but she didn't turn away.

“I understand.””

“No, you don't.”” Rachel's voice broke.

“I spent seven years believing that anyone who came looking for me would disappear. Margaret told me you had stopped searching. She showed me articles about other cases and said nobody cared anymore.””

Dana took a careful step forward.

“I never stopped.””

Rachel stared at her.

Then, slowly, she reached out.

Dana embraced her sister, and Rachel collapsed against her shoulder.

For a few seconds, the warehouse contained no agents, no suspects, and no investigation.

Just two sisters who had lost seven years to someone else's cruelty.

I let them have the moment.

Then my phone rang.

Emily.

I answered immediately.

“Sweetheart?””

“Mom, I need you to listen. Margaret left the car.””

“Where are you?””

“I don't know. Claire and I are in some kind of storage building. There are cameras everywhere.””

“Can you see anything outside?””

Emily moved the phone.

“I can see a sign through the window. It says Prescott Industrial Services.””

Rachel heard her.

She pulled away from Dana.

“That's the building.””

I looked at Dana.

“Emily is there.””

Dana immediately alerted the tactical team.

“Emily, listen carefully. Stay where you are. Don't confront anyone, and don't try to leave unless Claire tells you it's safe.””

“Mom, there's something else.””

Her voice dropped.

“Margaret has the original archive. But she doesn't know I already sent another copy.””

“To whom?””

“Dad's old email account.””

My breath caught.

“Daniel's account?””

“Yes. I found the password in an old notebook he kept at home. I sent the files there before Ethan discovered what I'd copied.””

I looked at the phone in disbelief.

“Emily, when did you do that?””

“Before he locked me in the guesthouse.””

A federal investigator nearby overheard us and immediately contacted the digital evidence team.

“Can you access the account?”” I asked.

“Not from here. But the files are still there. I know because I received a delivery confirmation.””

My husband's old email account had been inactive for six years.

If Emily had sent the archive there, it might have preserved evidence that Cross and the Prescotts had never discovered.

I felt something inside me shift.

Daniel hadn't been forgotten.

His work hadn't disappeared.

And my daughter had unknowingly preserved the evidence he died trying to protect.

“Emily, you did exactly the right thing.””

“I was scared, Mom.””

“I know.””

“I'm still scared.””

“So am I, sweetheart. But we're coming for you.””

Dana ended the call only after the tactical team confirmed its route and established communication with local emergency services.

The industrial property lay beyond a stretch of abandoned warehouses and overgrown railway sidings. Rain had flooded parts of the access road, and the building's eastern wall showed signs of recent structural damage.

The demolition crew was scheduled to arrive at midnight.

It was 10:36 p.m.

We had less than ninety minutes.

Before leaving, Dana approached Cross.

“Tell us where Margaret is.””

He stared at the floor.

“She's already inside the facility.””

“Where?””

“The underground archive.””

“Is Rachel there?””

“No.””

“Is Emily?””

He hesitated.

Then he looked at me.

“Margaret has been preparing for this for years. You think she's going to surrender because you found a few files?””

I stepped closer.

“You know what happened to Daniel. You know what happened to Claire. And you know what happened to Rachel.””

Cross's jaw tightened.

“Daniel should have walked away.””

“He was trying to expose corruption.””

“He was trying to destroy people who were more powerful than he was.””

“He was trying to do his job.””

Cross looked at me with something resembling regret.

“He called me the night he died.””

The words struck like a blow.

“What?””

“He told me he had sent copies of the records to someone he trusted. He asked me to protect his family.””

My throat tightened.

“And you refused?””

Cross looked away.

“I told him I would handle it.””

“You did handle it. You arranged his death.””

He said nothing.

That silence was answer enough.

Dana ordered the agents to move Cross into a secure vehicle.

Then she turned to me.

“Victoria, we're going to recover Emily, secure the archive, and locate Claire. No one enters that building without the tactical team's authorization.””

I nodded.

As we approached the industrial property, the sky flashed white with lightning.

Through the rain, I saw a single illuminated window on the building's eastern side.

A figure stood behind it.

A woman with dark hair.

She raised one hand against the glass.

Then she disappeared.

Rachel grabbed Dana's arm.

“That was Margaret.””

Dana raised her radio.

“Team One, confirm visual contact. Team Two, secure the eastern perimeter. Nobody lets that building go dark.””

A crackling voice answered.

“Copy. We have movement inside the underground access corridor.””

Then another transmission came through.

“Agent Brooks, we have a problem. The demolition crew has arrived early.””

I checked my watch.

10:58 p.m.

From somewhere inside the building, a mechanical alarm began to sound.

Rachel went white.

“No,” she whispered.

“She's starting the countdown.””

Dana looked toward the illuminated window.

“What countdown?””

Rachel turned to me.

“The archive isn't just a room full of records.””

Her voice trembled.

“It's where Margaret keeps the last witness who can prove everything.””

May you like

She swallowed hard.

“And if the demolition begins, that witness will die with the evidence.””
