Chapter 11: The Meeting That Became an Ambush
At 8:42 p.m., I sat in the back of an unmarked federal vehicle parked three blocks from the warehouse.
The rain had returned.
Water slid down the windows, blurring the streetlights into long yellow streaks. Across the road, the abandoned warehouse stood behind a chain-link fence, its broken windows reflecting the occasional flash of lightning.
Dana sat beside me, reviewing the plan with Marcus through a secure communication device.
“Two teams are covering the north and south entrances,” she said.
“A third team is positioned near the railway tracks. No one approaches the building until the surveillance officer confirms Claire is inside.””
“And if she isn't?””
“We leave.””
I checked my watch.
8:47.
Five minutes earlier, Sloan had confirmed that Cross's office had received no official notice of the meeting. Yet the warning suggested someone had learned about it.
I didn't like coincidences.
“Dana,” I said, “how certain are we that Claire sent the address?””
“Her handwriting matches the previous note. The paper also contains a partial fingerprint we're comparing with available records.””
“That doesn't prove she wrote it.””
“No. It doesn't.””
She looked at me.
“But if she wants to expose Cross, she needs someone she believes he can't easily intimidate.””
“Why me?””
“Because Daniel was involved in the original investigation. You may be the only person who can recognize something in the evidence that we can't.””
At 8:55, the surveillance officer reported movement near the warehouse.
A woman had entered through a side door.
She wore a dark coat and carried no bag.
The officer sent a photograph.
Dana enlarged it.
“Claire.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“Then let's go.””
We waited another three minutes while the teams confirmed the perimeter.
At 9:01, Marcus gave the signal.
Dana and I approached the warehouse with two agents, staying close to the concrete wall as rain soaked our shoulders.
The side door was unlocked.
Inside, the building smelled of wet cardboard, rust, and old oil. A single work lamp illuminated the center of the floor. Beyond it, rows of abandoned machinery disappeared into darkness.
“Claire?”” Dana called.
A figure stepped out from behind a support column.
The woman looked thinner than she had in the hospital photograph. Her dark hair fell unevenly around her face, and a pale scar crossed her left cheek.
But her eyes were clear.
“Victoria Hart?””
“Yes.””
Claire studied me.
“You look like Daniel.””
The words struck harder than I expected.
“You knew my husband?””
“I met him twice. He was trying to help Rachel expose the Prescott network.””
“What happened to him?””
Claire's face tightened.
“He found evidence that Samuel Cross was selling confidential information to private contractors. He was preparing to report it when he died.””
“Did Cross cause the accident?””
“I don't know who was driving the other vehicle. But I know Cross received a message about Daniel's death before the official report was released.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Why didn't you come forward?””
“Because the first person I trusted disappeared. The second ended up dead.””
Dana stepped closer.
“Where is Rachel?””
Claire looked toward the ceiling.
“Alive. For now.””
“Where?””
“I can't tell you until I know you can protect her.””
Dana's voice softened.
“Rachel is my sister. I've spent seven years trying to find her.””
“I know. That's why she contacted you.””
“Then let me bring her home.””
Claire shook her head.
“Your sister has spent seven years watching people disappear because they trusted the wrong person. She won't come out until Cross is unable to reach her.””
I studied Claire.
“What do you need from us?””
She pulled a small flash drive from the inside pocket of her coat.
“Daniel made a copy of the original procurement records. He gave it to me the week before he died. I kept it hidden, and Rachel added the files she recovered from the Prescott system.””
She held the drive toward me.
“Everything is here. Payments, recordings, false identities, and communications between Cross and Margaret.””
Dana took a protective step forward.
“Why bring it to us now?””
“Because Margaret has begun moving people again. Rachel believes she's preparing to destroy the last evidence connecting her family to the disappearances.””
I reached for the drive.
Before my fingers touched it, the warehouse lights went out.
A sharp crack echoed through the building.
“DOWN!”” Marcus shouted.
We dropped behind the machinery.
Another crack sounded.
Glass shattered above us.
One of the agents called out that the north entrance was compromised. Footsteps pounded across the concrete floor.
Dana pulled Claire behind a steel support.
“Did you bring anyone here?”” she shouted.
“No!””
“Then we're leaving. Now!””
A figure appeared at the far end of the warehouse, silhouetted against the open loading door.
The person raised a phone.
A voice came through a small loudspeaker.
“Colonel Hart. Step into the light.””
I recognized the voice immediately.
Samuel Cross.
“Come out alone,” he continued.
“Or the people you care about will pay for your stubbornness.””
Dana signaled the agents to hold their positions.
I stayed behind the machinery.
“Why don't you come in and explain yourself?”” I called.
Cross laughed.
“Daniel was exactly like you. He thought rules mattered more than results.””
“Did you have him killed?””
“I gave him a chance to walk away.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“No. It's the only answer you're getting.””
A flash of movement caught my eye near the loading door.
Someone was approaching Cross from behind.
The figure was small, quick, and carrying something in one hand.
Then a woman's voice rang through the warehouse.
“Sam, you promised you wouldn't hurt anyone else.””
Cross turned.
“Rachel?””
Dana gasped.
A woman stepped into the light.
Her hair was short, and she wore a gray jacket several sizes too large. Her face was pale, but her eyes were unmistakable.
Rachel Brooks.
Dana started forward.
“Rachel!””
“Don't come closer!”” Rachel shouted.
“Not until you listen!””
Cross seized her arm.
“You shouldn't have come here.””
Rachel struggled.
“You told me Daniel was going to prison. You told me the accident was meant to scare him.””
The warehouse fell silent.
I felt the words hit like a physical blow.
Cross tightened his grip.
“Be quiet.””
Rachel raised her free hand.
In it was a small recording device.
“I recorded everything,” she said.
“The meeting where you ordered the accident. The payments. The calls to Margaret. All of it.””
Cross's expression shattered.
Then he pulled Rachel toward him and pressed a small object against her side.
“Everyone stays where they are,” he said.
Dana froze.
“Sam, let her go.””
Cross looked directly at me.
“Colonel Hart, you're going to make a choice. Your daughter or the truth.””
My blood turned to ice.
“What have you done to Emily?””
He smiled.
“Nothing yet.””
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of Emily's hospital room.
Her bed was empty.
May you like
And beneath the photograph were four words.
*YOUR DAUGHTER IS WITH US.*
