Chapter 3: The Agent's Missing Sister

For several seconds, Special Agent Dana Brooks didn't move.

Her hand remained on the edge of the bedside table. Her face had gone pale, but her voice, when it came, was controlled.

“Emily, I need you to repeat that name.””

“Rachel Brooks.””

“Did you see the name written on a file, or did you hear someone say it?””

“Both,” Emily replied.

“There was a folder with her name. And in the video, someone called her Rachel.””

Dana pulled out a chair and sat down slowly.

I had seen experienced officers receive devastating news before. The best ones didn't pretend it meant nothing. They simply refused to let their emotions make decisions for them.

Dana was trying to do exactly that.

“Rachel is my younger sister,” she said.

“She disappeared seven years ago.””

Emily reached toward her.

“I'm sorry.””

Dana shook her head once.

“Don't apologize for telling me.””

The other investigator, a broad-shouldered man named Marcus Lee, stepped toward the door and quietly spoke into his phone. He returned a moment later.

“Agent Brooks, I'm requesting another team to take over evidence handling. You should not be the primary investigator on anything directly involving your sister.””

Dana nodded, though her eyes remained on Emily.

“Agreed.””

I respected her for that. A personal connection didn't mean she had to abandon the case entirely, but the evidence needed to be handled independently.

“Emily,” I said gently, “can you tell us exactly what you saw?””

She drew a breath.

“The folder was marked RACHEL BROOKS. It had a date from seven years ago. There were photographs, a scanned document, and a video file.””

“What was in the document?”” Marcus asked.

“A form with signatures. I didn't read all of it. I was afraid Ethan would come back.””

“Did you recognize the signatures?””

Emily shook her head.

“One looked like Ethan's. Another had the initials M.P.””

Margaret Prescott.

I glanced at Dana.

She was already writing.

“Did the video show Rachel?”” she asked.

“I think so. There was a woman sitting in a chair. Her hair was shorter than yours, but she had the same eyes.””

Dana's pen stopped.

“Did she say anything?””

Emily looked down.

“She said, ‘If anyone finds this, tell Dana I didn't leave her.’”

Dana closed her eyes.

For a moment, the room contained nothing but the steady beep of the heart monitor.

Then Dana stood, walked to the window, and pressed her palm against the glass.

“My sister called me the night she disappeared,” she said.

“I was working a late shift at a local police department. She told me she had discovered something dangerous.””

She turned back toward us.

“I told her to meet me at the station. She never arrived.””

“Did you report her missing?”” I asked.

“Immediately. The department investigated for months. They found her car abandoned outside a shopping center, but there was no evidence of an assault. Then an anonymous tip claimed she had left the state voluntarily.””

“And you believed it?””

“I never believed it.”” Her jaw tightened.

“But the case was closed after a judge accepted evidence that she had withdrawn her missing-person report.””

“Was that report genuine?””

Dana gave a bitter laugh.

“I have spent seven years trying to find out.””

Marcus approached her.

“Agent Brooks, the new team is on its way. We should secure the original evidence and establish a chain of custody.””

She nodded and turned to Emily.

“I need to ask you something difficult. Did you make a copy of the files anywhere else?””

Emily hesitated.

The pause was brief, but I noticed it.

“Sweetheart?””

She looked at me.

“I didn't copy everything onto another device.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What does that mean?””

“I copied the video onto a small storage drive. But the files on the memory card were already organized into folders. I only opened two of them.””

“Where is the storage drive?”” I asked.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“Ethan took it when he caught me.””

For the first time since entering the room, Dana looked openly frightened.

“Did he know what was on it?””

“He knew I had copied something. I don't know if he knew which files.””

Marcus moved to the door and called for hospital security.

I stood beside Emily's bed.

“Listen to me. You did the right thing by telling us. Whatever happens next, you will not have to face Ethan alone.””

She nodded, but her expression remained troubled.

“Mom, there's something else.””

I sat down again.

“Tell me.””

“When I escaped, I heard Margaret talking to someone on the phone. She thought I was unconscious.””

“What did she say?””

Emily swallowed.

“She said, ‘The daughter found Rachel's file. If she talks, we lose everything.’”

Dana gripped the back of the chair.

“Did Margaret mention where Rachel was?””

“No. But she said something about the old property.””

“What property?”” Marcus asked.

Emily shook her head.

“I don't know. Then Margaret said, ‘Move what's left before the federal people arrive.’”

Marcus exchanged a look with Dana.

The words suggested the Prescotts knew someone was investigating them. They also suggested the memory card was only one piece of a much larger puzzle.

My phone vibrated.

An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

I answered without leaving Emily's side.

“Colonel Hart.””

A man's voice came through, quiet and urgent.

“Mrs. Hart, you need to listen carefully. Your daughter is in danger.””

“Who is this?””

“I worked security at the Prescott estate. I saw what happened to Emily. I also know what happened to Claire Bennett.””

I glanced toward Marcus, who immediately signaled for me to keep the caller talking.

“Then tell me your name.””

“Daniel Mercer.””

“Where are you?””

“Not somewhere I can stay long.””

“Do you have evidence?””

“I have a photograph. It was taken the night Claire disappeared.””

“Send it to Agent Brooks.””

“No.”” His voice trembled.

“Not yet. There's something in the background you need to see first.””

“Daniel, if you have information about a missing woman, we can arrange a safe way for you to provide it.””

He gave a strained laugh.

“You don't understand. The Prescott family knows about your daughter. They know about the card. And they know who you are.””

I felt my spine stiffen.

“What do you mean, they know who I am?””

“Your military record. Your old investigations. Everything.””

The call crackled.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“Colonel, Claire didn't disappear because she discovered the Prescott family's secrets.””

“Then why did she disappear?””

“Because she was helping someone escape.””

“Who?””

Before he could answer, I heard a door slam on his end of the line.

Daniel gasped.

“Wait. No—”

A struggle followed. Something struck the phone, and the line filled with static.

“Daniel?”” I shouted.

“Daniel, can you hear me?””

The call disconnected.

Marcus was already moving.

“I'm tracing the number and notifying local authorities. Agent Brooks, we need to secure the hospital.””

Dana nodded, her face hardening.

Then my phone chimed.

A message had arrived from the unknown number.

It contained a single photograph.

I opened it.

The image showed a young woman standing beside the Prescott estate's guesthouse, one hand raised to shield her face from the camera. Behind her stood Margaret Prescott, unmistakable in a pale coat.

The date printed beneath the photograph was seven years old.

And the woman beside Margaret was not Claire Bennett.

It was Rachel Brooks.

Dana stared at the screen, her lips parting.

Then she whispered, “That's impossible.””

I enlarged the image.

Behind Rachel, half-hidden by the guesthouse doorway, stood a second woman.

Her face was blurred, but her hand rested against the doorframe.

On her wrist was a distinctive silver bracelet.

Emily gasped.

“Mom.””

I looked at her.

She was staring at the photograph as if the room had suddenly begun to spin.

“That's the bracelet Claire wore in the video.””

Dana took the phone from me, her fingers trembling.

If Rachel had been at the Prescott estate seven years ago, and Claire had been there too, then the official stories about both women were missing something enormous.

But the photograph revealed one more detail.

Written in black marker on the guesthouse door were four words:

*NO ONE LEAVES ALONE.*

May you like

And beneath them, almost hidden in the shadows, was a date.

Tomorrow's date.
