Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

When I got home, Rachel was waiting.

She was sitting in the dark.

The lights were off.

The only sound was the ticking clock on the wall.

She looked up when I entered.

“You saw him.””

It wasn’t a question.

I placed the photograph on the table.

Her face changed immediately.

She knew it.

“You’ve seen this before.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

I felt something inside me break.

“Who is the baby?””

She didn’t answer.

“Rachel.””

Her hands trembled.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed quietly.

“You don’t know?””

“I know what I was told.””

“By who?””

She looked at the picture.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He came to me before he died.””

“That’s impossible.””

“He was sick.””

I stared at her.

“You said he was dead.””

“He was.””

“Then how did he come to you?””

Rachel swallowed.

“He knew he didn’t have much time.””

I walked away.

My head was spinning.

“My entire life, everyone knew something except me.””

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

Rachel didn’t respond.

I pointed at the photograph.

“What is this?””

She whispered:

“A promise.””

“To who?””

“To your father.””

I stared at her.

“What promise?””

Rachel looked upstairs.

“At the hospital.””

My stomach tightened.

“When Emma was born?””

She nodded.

“Your father made me promise I would protect her.””

“Protect who?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Emma.””

I waited.

But the answer didn’t come.

“From what?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“From the people who wanted to use her.””

The room went silent.

“Use her for what?””

“I don’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because your father never told me.””

I walked closer.

“But he told you enough to scare you.””

Rachel nodded.

“He said if anyone ever asked about Emma’s birth, I should say nothing.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed someone would hurt her.””

I looked toward the stairs.

My daughter.

The little girl who thought dinner being thrown away was the worst thing she had to face.

I felt anger rising.

Not at Emma.

Never at Emma.

At everyone who had made decisions around her.

Without her.

Without me.

My phone rang.

This time, it was not unknown.

It was my father’s old lawyer.

I hadn’t spoken to him in years.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A tired voice replied.

“Are you sitting down?””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because I received instructions to contact you if Daniel ever came back.””

I looked at Rachel.

She went pale.

“What instructions?””

The lawyer was quiet.

Then he said:

“Your father left a recorded message.””

I gripped the phone.

“When?””

“Eight years ago.””

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because he specifically said not to.””

My voice became cold.

“Until when?””

“Until the day you discovered the truth about Emma.””

The room seemed to stop.

I looked at Rachel.

She looked terrified.

“Where is the recording?””

The lawyer answered.

“At my office.””

“When can I get it?””

A pause.

“Tomorrow.””

I ended the call.

Rachel whispered:

“Your father knew this day would come.””

I looked at the photograph.

The baby.

The secret.

The lies.

Everything had been planned.

But one thing bothered me.

If my father wanted me to know the truth…

why did he wait until after he was gone?

That night, I sat beside Emma’s bed.

I watched her sleep.

Then she suddenly opened her eyes.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

She looked scared.

“Are you going to send me away?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

“Promise?””

I held her hand.

“I promise.””

She relaxed.

Then she whispered:

“Mommy told me my real daddy would come back someday.””

I froze.

“What did you say?””

Emma’s eyes slowly closed again.

“I don’t know.””

She was already half asleep.

“Mommy said I wasn’t supposed to remember.””

I sat there completely still.

Because I finally understood.

The question was no longer who was hiding the truth.

May you like

The question was…

what truth had everyone been protecting Emma from?
