Chapter 14: The Truth Everyone Wanted
The cabin filled with noise.
Car doors.
Footsteps.
Voices outside.
Emma grabbed my hand.
This time, I didn’t let go.
My mother looked at me.
“There’s no time.””
I stared at her.
“You don’t get to say that.””
She flinched.
“You’re right.””
For the first time, my mother looked less like a mystery.
And more like a person carrying years of regret.
“I made mistakes.””
“You disappeared.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I know.””
“Do you know what that did to me?””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The answer surprised me.
Because she didn’t defend herself.
She accepted it.
“I thought staying away would protect you.””
“Everyone says that.””
I looked around.
“Everyone says they’re protecting me while destroying my life.””
My mother lowered her head.
“You’re right.””
The door shook.
Someone outside shouted.
“Open the door!””
My mother moved toward the fireplace.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
She pulled out a small metal box.
“This is what they want.””
I stared.
“What is it?””
“Proof.””
“The same proof Daniel wanted?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“So Daniel was telling the truth?””
“About some things.””
“And lying about others?””
“Yes.””
She opened the box.
Inside was a document.
And a recording device.
“My father’s evidence.””
She nodded.
“Your father discovered that Daniel wasn’t working alone.””
“Who was he working with?””
She looked at me.
“Me.””
The room stopped.
I couldn’t move.
“What?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Years ago, I helped Daniel build the company.””
I stepped back.
“You were part of it?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Dad blame him?””
“Because I was the one who wanted to hide everything.””
My anger turned into confusion.
“Why?””
“Because I made a choice that ruined all of us.””
She looked toward Emma.
“I tried to protect my family.””
“By destroying it?””
Tears rolled down her face.
“Yes.””
The honesty made it worse.
A loud crash came from the front door.
My mother continued.
“Your father found out I had changed records.””
“What records?””
“Emma’s.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Why?””
My mother whispered:
“Because Emma wasn’t supposed to exist in the system.””
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone powerful wanted her erased.””
“Who?””
Before she could answer, the door broke open.
Daniel walked inside.
Behind him were two other men.
I immediately moved in front of Emma.
Daniel looked at me.
“I told you.””
I stared at him.
“You knew she was alive.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my mother was involved.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked tired.
“Because your father asked me not to.””
I laughed.
“My father?””
“Your father knew everyone would come after you if you knew too soon.””
“You’re all insane.””
Daniel looked at Emma.
“No.””
His voice softened.
“She’s the reason your father sacrificed everything.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“You failed him too.””
Her face fell.
“I know.””
I looked between them.
“Enough.””
Everyone stopped.
“Emma is not a secret.””
I pointed at my daughter.
“She’s not evidence.””
“She’s not a weapon.””
“She’s a child.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel slowly lowered his hands.
And for the first time, he looked ashamed.
“I know.””
A phone rang.
One of the men behind him answered.
Then his expression changed.
“Sir.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
The man whispered something.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“What do you mean he escaped?””
I noticed it.
The fear.
Not acting.
Real fear.
“Who escaped?””
Daniel looked at me.
And the answer made everyone silent.
“The person who started all of this.””
My mother whispered:
“No.””
May you like
Daniel looked toward the door.
“He’s coming here.””
