Chapter 5: The Secret My Father Left Behind
I read the letter three times.
The words didn’t change.
But somehow they became worse every time.
My father.
Daniel.
Rachel.
A secret from before I was born.
None of it made sense.
My father had been gone for eight years.
He was the quietest man I knew.
A man who woke up early, worked with his hands, and never talked about his past.
I always thought he had no secrets.
I was wrong.
“What did my father take from him?””
Rachel sat down.
“I don’t know everything.””
I looked at her.
“That’s not good enough.””
“I know.””
She rubbed her face.
“But I know Daniel blamed your father for ruining his life.””
“How?””
Rachel looked at the letter.
“Your father was Daniel’s business partner.””
I froze.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“They owned a company together before you were born.””
I laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“My father repaired cars in a small garage.””
“That’s what he wanted people to believe.””
I stared at her.
“You’re telling me my father had an entire life I knew nothing about?””
Rachel looked away.
“Yes.””
Emma was still sitting at the table.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
I turned toward her.
“Sweetheart, why don’t you go upstairs for a little bit?””
She looked scared.
“I want to stay.””
I softened my voice.
“I know.””
I held her hand.
“But adults need to talk.””
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
Before she walked away, she looked at Rachel.
“Are you going to hurt me again?””
Rachel broke.
The tears came instantly.
“No.””
Emma waited.
Rachel covered her mouth.
“I promise.””
My daughter slowly walked upstairs.
The second she disappeared, I turned back.
“Now tell me.””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“Daniel used to be your father’s closest friend.””
“And?””
“They built a company together.””
“What happened?””
“He says your father betrayed him.””
“Did he?””
Rachel looked down.
“I don’t know.””
That answer made me angry.
“You don’t know?””
“I only know what Daniel told me.””
“And what did he tell you?””
Rachel hesitated.
“He said your father stole millions from him.””
The room went silent.
I looked at the letter again.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because my father died with nothing.””
Rachel stared at me.
“Are you sure?””
The question bothered me.
Because suddenly I wasn’t.
I remembered the locked drawer in my father’s old desk.
The one he never let me open.
The one he called “something from the past.””
I had forgotten about it.
Until now.
“I need to go to my father’s house.””
Rachel stood.
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
She stopped.
“I don’t trust you yet.””
She nodded slowly.
“I understand.””
That hurt more than anger would have.
Because she knew she deserved it.
Before I left, my phone rang.
A blocked number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then I heard breathing.
“Who is this?””
Silence.
Then a man’s voice.
Calm.
Almost polite.
“You’re asking the wrong questions.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Daniel?””
A small laugh.
“So Rachel finally told you.””
“How long have you been watching us?””
“Long enough.””
“Stay away from my daughter.””
Another pause.
Then his voice changed.
“You think I’m the danger?””
I looked at the stairs where Emma had disappeared.
“What are you talking about?””
The man sighed.
“Your father never told you what he did.””
I said nothing.
“He left something behind.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
Daniel whispered:
“The truth.””
The call ended.
I stood there staring at the phone.
Then I noticed something.
A small envelope had been pushed underneath my front door.
My name was written on it.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A picture of my father.
Holding a baby.
A baby that looked exactly like Emma.
May you like
And on the back were six words.
*“Ask your wife who this child is.””*
