Chapter 11: The Box My Father Buried
Daniel left before I could stop him.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I needed answers from Rachel first.
The moment the door closed, I turned around.
“What proof?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
She walked to the hallway closet.
Slowly.
Like every step hurt.
From the top shelf, she pulled down a small wooden box.
I had seen it before.
Years ago.
I remembered asking about it.
Rachel told me it was nothing.
She had lied.
Again.
She placed it on the table.
“I kept this because your father asked me to.””
I stared.
“How long?””
“Seven years.””
I opened it.
Inside was a flash drive.
A photograph.
And a handwritten note.
The note was from my father.
I read it.
*“If Daniel returns, the truth must come out.””*
My hands tightened.
“What is on the drive?””
Rachel looked away.
“Everything.””
I plugged it into my laptop.
A video file appeared.
Created eight years ago.
I clicked play.
My father appeared on screen.
Older.
Sicker.
But alive.
My chest tightened.
“If you are watching this, then I failed to keep my promise.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“I wanted to tell you everything myself.””
He took a breath.
“But I knew the people involved would come after you.””
My father looked down.
“Daniel believes I stole from him.””
A pause.
“He is wrong.””
I leaned closer.
“I protected something from him.””
The video continued.
“Years ago, Daniel discovered a way to manipulate company records and hide illegal transactions.””
My eyes widened.
“He wanted me to take the blame.””
I looked at Rachel.
She watched the screen silently.
“My mistake was believing I could fix everything quietly.””
My father’s voice cracked.
“I should have gone to the authorities.””
The video froze for a second.
Then continued.
“Emma was born into the middle of this.””
I stopped breathing.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“Not because she was involved.””
“Because she was the reason I finally chose to fight.””
I felt tears forming.
My father continued:
“When Daniel realized I had evidence, he threatened the people I loved.””
The video ended.
I sat there.
Silent.
Daniel wasn’t searching for a secret about Emma.
He was searching for evidence.
Evidence my father had hidden.
But there was one thing I didn’t understand.
“Why did you marry me?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Because your father asked me.””
I closed my eyes.
“And later?””
Her voice softened.
“Later because I loved you.””
I looked away.
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
“You should have trusted me.””
“I know.””
Emma appeared at the doorway.
She had tears in her eyes.
“Daddy?””
I immediately went to her.
“What’s wrong?””
She looked at Rachel.
“Is Mommy going away?””
Rachel broke down.
“No, sweetheart.””
Emma looked at me.
“Are you?””
The question hurt.
I picked her up.
“No.””
“But I’m not really your daughter.””
I held her tighter.
“Listen to me.””
She looked at me.
“There are people who share your blood.””
I touched her hair.
“And there are people who choose you every single day.””
Her eyes filled.
“You choose me?””
“Every day.””
She hugged me.
Then my laptop chimed.
A new email arrived.
No sender.
Only an attachment.
I opened it.
A photograph appeared.
My father.
Daniel.
Rachel.
And a fourth person.
Someone I didn’t recognize.
The message underneath was short.
*“Daniel is not the person your father was afraid of.””*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another line appeared.
*“The person who ordered your father’s death is still alive.””*
