Chapter 2: The Things I Never Saw

I locked the front door after Rachel left.

Not because I thought she would come back.

Because for the first time in years, I wasn’t sure who she was.

Emma sat on the couch with a blanket around her shoulders.

The television was on, but neither of us was watching.

I sat beside her.

“Emma?””

She looked at me.

“Yes, Daddy?””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears again.

“I tried.””

Those two words hurt more than anything.

“You tried?””

She nodded.

“Whenever I said something, Mommy said you were too busy.””

I looked down.

Because maybe that was true.

Not that I didn’t love my daughter.

I did.

More than anything.

But I had worked extra hours.

I had taken every overtime shift I could.

I told myself I was building a better life for her.

A bigger house.

More savings.

A safer future.

But while I was chasing a future, I had missed her present.

“Why didn’t you tell me tonight?””

Emma played with the edge of the blanket.

“Because I thought you would be mad at me.””

My heart broke.

“Mad at you?””

She nodded.

“Because Mommy always says when people fight, it’s because of me.””

I closed my eyes.

I had heard Rachel complain before.

She said Emma was sensitive.

Difficult.

Too emotional.

I believed small pieces of it because I trusted my wife.

That was my mistake.

I took Emma’s hand.

“Listen to me.””

She looked up.

“Nothing you did made this happen.””

She stayed quiet.

“Nothing.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Promise?””

I squeezed her hand.

“I promise.””

The next morning, I didn’t go to work.

I called my boss and told him there was a family emergency.

Then I started looking through things I had ignored for months.

The first thing I found was in Emma’s backpack.

A folded piece of paper hidden inside a coloring book.

I almost threw it away.

Then I saw my name.

Daddy.

My hands started shaking as I opened it.

It was a drawing.

Me holding Emma’s hand.

Rachel standing far away.

And above Rachel was a sentence written in uneven handwriting.

“Mommy gets angry when Daddy isn’t home.””

I sat there for a long time.

Then I heard footsteps.

Emma stood in the doorway.

“Did you find it?””

I looked at her.

“You made this?””

She nodded.

“Last month.””

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

She looked down.

“Because Mommy found it first.””

My blood ran cold.

“What did she do?””

Emma didn’t answer immediately.

“She told me if I made Daddy upset, you might leave.””

I stood up.

“No.””

My voice became sharper than I wanted.

“No, Emma. Listen to me.””

I knelt down.

“I am never leaving you.””

She hugged me.

And for a moment, I forgot about anger.

I forgot about Rachel.

I just held my little girl.

Then my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

It was Rachel.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I needed the truth.

I picked up.

“Where are you?””

There was silence.

Then Rachel spoke.

Her voice sounded different.

Scared.

“I know what Emma told you.””

I said nothing.

“Please let me explain.””

“You left.””

“I panicked.””

“You saw what was on her arm and ran.””

Rachel started crying.

“It’s not what you think.””

I looked at Emma.

She was watching me carefully.

Waiting.

“Then tell me what it is.””

Another silence.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Because if you find out why that bruise happened, you’re going to hate me.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What are you talking about?””

Rachel took a shaky breath.

May you like

And then she said something that made my entire body go numb.

“Emma isn’t the only person in this house who has been hiding something.””
