Chapter 4: The Stranger at the Door

The knocking stopped.

But nobody moved.

The silence that followed felt heavier than the sound itself.

Emma’s hand tightened around mine.

“Daddy…”

I looked down at her.

“It’s okay.””

But my voice didn’t sound convincing.

Because it wasn’t okay.

Not when my seven-year-old daughter was standing behind me, afraid in her own home.

Not when my wife looked at the front door like it was a threat.

Not when someone had been taking pictures of our house.

I stepped forward.

Rachel grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her.

“You said this person was dangerous.””

She nodded.

“Then I need to know who it is.””

Rachel’s eyes moved toward Emma.

“Take her upstairs.””

Emma immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Sweetheart—”

“No.””

Her voice was small.

But firm.

“I don’t want to be alone.””

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because I realized she had spent too much time alone already.

I crouched beside her.

“You won’t be.””

Then I looked at Rachel.

“Stay here.””

I walked toward the door.

The hallway suddenly felt longer than it had ever been.

I looked through the window beside the door.

Nobody was there.

My heart pounded.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

My blood went cold.

It was a picture.

A picture of me standing in the hallway.

Taken seconds ago.

Underneath it were four words.

*“You should have listened.””*

I stepped back.

Rachel saw my face.

“What is it?””

I handed her the phone.

The color drained from her face.

“He’s here.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

“Daniel.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“Who is Daniel?””

Rachel looked toward Emma.

Then back at me.

“Someone I knew before we got married.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“An ex?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what?””

Rachel’s hands started shaking.

“He was my boss.””

I stared at her.

“And why is he taking pictures of our house?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the problem.

Rachel always had answers.

Excuses.

Explanations.

But now she looked terrified.

“Tell me everything.””

She swallowed.

“Daniel was obsessed with control.””

“What does that mean?””

“He liked knowing everything. Where people went. Who they talked to. What they did.””

“And you worked for him?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

“Three years.””

I looked at the notebook.

The pictures.

The notes.

“You knew he was watching us?””

Rachel looked down.

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

My voice rose.

“You let me sleep in this house. You let Emma sleep in this house. And you only tell me now?””

“I was trying to handle it.””

“You were trying to handle it?””

I pointed at the front door.

“Someone is outside taking pictures of our daughter’s home.””

Rachel flinched.

“I was scared.””

The honesty stopped me.

Because for the first time, I believed her.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But enough to know there was something bigger happening.

A sudden crash came from outside.

Emma screamed.

I grabbed her instantly.

The three of us froze.

Then another message appeared.

This time with a video.

My hands trembled as I pressed play.

The camera showed our backyard.

The angle was from behind the fence.

Someone had been standing there.

Watching.

Then the camera turned.

And the final frame showed Emma’s bedroom window.

Rachel covered her mouth.

“No…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She stared at the screen.

“He knows about her.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked to the cabinet near the kitchen.

She pulled out a small locked box.

I had never seen it before.

“What is that?””

She placed it on the table.

“I kept this hidden because I thought hiding it would keep you safe.””

She opened it.

Inside was a stack of papers.

A photograph.

And a letter.

The photograph was old.

A younger Rachel.

Daniel standing beside her.

And another person.

Someone I recognized.

My own father.

I stared at the picture.

“What is this?””

Rachel whispered:

“This is why Daniel came back.””

I looked at the letter.

The first line made my entire body go numb.

*“If anything happens to me, tell my son the truth about what happened before he was born.””*

I looked up.

“Rachel…”

She looked terrified.

“I never told you because I was afraid you would leave.””

“Leave because of what?””

She looked at Emma.

Then at me.

“Because Daniel isn’t after our family.””

May you like

A pause.

“He’s after something your father took from him.””
