Chapter 9: The Evidence Rachel Left Behind

The name echoed in my head.

Rachel Carter.

Again.

Every road led back to her.

I had spent years believing Rachel was the problem.

Now I was beginning to understand something terrifying.

Maybe Rachel had been warning everyone.

And nobody listened.

The police investigator, Detective Morgan, met me outside Maya’s room.

She was holding a folder.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to ask you some questions.””

I nodded.

“About Daniel?””

“Yes.””

I looked through the hospital window at Maya.

She was watching me.

I gave her a small smile.

I wanted her to know I wasn’t leaving.

Detective Morgan opened the folder.

“We found documents in Daniel’s office.””

“What kind?””

“Copies of medical records.””

I already knew.

“Rachel’s?””

“Yes.””

“And Maya’s?””

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why would he keep them?””

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

I looked at the detective.

“You think he hurt them?””

She chose her words carefully.

“We believe Daniel had access to information he should not have had.””

That was enough.

“Did you find anything else?””

Detective Morgan looked at the folder.

“Yes.””

She pulled out a photograph.

A different one.

“This was found inside Rachel’s old belongings.””

I looked down.

It was a picture of Rachel standing outside a clinic.

Behind her was a handwritten note.

*If Daniel says I left, don’t believe him.*

My breath caught.

“She knew.””

Detective Morgan nodded.

“She was documenting everything.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed someone was trying to make her look unreliable.””

I felt tears forming.

Because that was exactly what happened to Maya.

And almost happened again.

Detective Morgan continued.

“There’s more.””

She handed me another page.

A letter.

Rachel’s handwriting.

I read the first line.

*To whoever finds this, please believe me.*

My hands trembled.

The letter explained that Rachel had discovered Daniel was accessing her private information.

She wrote about the medication.

The changed records.

The way he convinced people she was unstable.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

The one that made my heart stop.

*Daniel has a daughter now. If he ever starts telling people she is lying, please protect her.*

I covered my mouth.

Because Rachel knew.

She knew this could happen again.

Detective Morgan watched me carefully.

“She wrote this before she disappeared.””

“Where is she now?””

The detective didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told me enough.

“We’re still investigating.””

I looked back at Maya’s room.

My daughter.

The girl who thought nobody would believe her.

The girl who carried fear instead of speaking.

I walked back inside.

Maya looked at me.

“What happened?””

I sat beside her.

“We found proof.””

Her eyes widened.

“About Daniel?””

I nodded.

She looked down.

“Is he going to hate me?””

That question hurt more than anything.

I held her face gently.

“No.””

“But he said—”

“He was wrong.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I just wanted someone to believe me.””

I pulled her into my arms.

“I believe you.””

For the first time in months, Maya cried without apologizing.

Then the door opened.

Dr. Harris walked in.

His expression was serious.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.””

I stood.

“What happened?””

He looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“We received another piece of information from the lab.””

My heart sank.

“What information?””

He placed a document on the table.

“We found out why Maya’s symptoms became so severe.””

I looked at the paper.

“What does it say?””

The doctor took a breath.

“Maya was exposed to something that made her condition worse.””

My blood went cold.

“Exposed by who?””

The doctor looked at me.

Then quietly answered:

“The records suggest the source was someone inside your home.””
