Chapter 13: The Hidden Truth Behind The Wall
I didn’t wait another second.
I called Detective Morgan.
“The key,” I said the moment she answered.
“Daniel took Maya’s old school bag. There was a key hidden inside.””
There was a pause.
Then her voice became serious.
“Where was the bag?””
“At home.””
“Mrs. Carter, do you know where Daniel is right now?””
I looked around the hospital room.
“No.””
“Stay there. Do not go home alone.””
But I already knew.
I couldn’t sit still.
Not anymore.
For months, my daughter had been afraid.
For months, Daniel controlled the story.
He decided who was believed.
He decided who was ignored.
He decided what people were allowed to know.
That ended now.
An officer drove me home with Detective Morgan following behind.
The house looked peaceful.
Almost innocent.
That was what frightened me.
Because behind those walls was a truth someone had spent years burying.
The officer searched the rooms.
Then we found Maya’s school bag.
It was sitting in Daniel’s office.
Open.
Empty.
“The key is gone,” I whispered.
Detective Morgan looked around the room.
“He knew.””
I touched the desk.
“He knew I found everything.””
Then something caught my attention.
A small scratch on the wall behind a bookshelf.
I walked closer.
“This wasn’t here before.””
The officer moved the bookshelf.
Behind it was a hidden panel.
My heart started racing.
Detective Morgan carefully opened it.
Inside was a small metal box.
But the box wasn’t locked.
It was empty.
I felt disappointed for one second.
Then I noticed something taped underneath.
A small piece of paper.
Three words.
*Check the basement.*
The basement.
I had lived in this house for years.
I had walked past that door thousands of times.
But I had never questioned why Daniel always kept it locked.
Detective Morgan looked at me.
“Do you have a key?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
The officer forced the lock.
The basement door opened slowly.
A cold smell came from inside.
Dust.
Old wood.
Forgotten things.
We turned on the lights.
At first, it looked normal.
Boxes.
Tools.
Old furniture.
Then Detective Morgan stopped.
“Wait.””
She pointed toward the wall.
There were marks.
Not random scratches.
A pattern.
The officer moved a shelf aside.
Behind it was another hidden compartment.
This time, there was something inside.
A small recorder.
And several envelopes.
The first envelope had Rachel’s handwriting.
I opened it carefully.
*If you found this, Daniel failed to destroy everything.*
My hands trembled.
Detective Morgan started recording the evidence.
The letter continued.
*I discovered Daniel was changing medical records and manipulating people’s trust. But that was not the worst part.*
I turned the page.
*Daniel knew Maya was different. He knew she noticed things.*
My heart sank.
Different.
I kept reading.
*He was afraid Maya would become someone he could not control.*
I looked at Detective Morgan.
“What does that mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Because the next line explained everything.
*Maya saw the truth before anyone else.*
I remembered Maya saying she heard Daniel talking.
She saw something.
She knew.
The recorder beside the letters suddenly caught my attention.
There was a date written on it.
Three years ago.
The day Rachel disappeared.
Detective Morgan pressed play.
Rachel’s voice filled the basement.
“If you are hearing this, Daniel found out I was investigating him.””
My breath stopped.
“I need someone to understand something. I didn’t leave.””
The room became silent.
“I was trying to protect myself.””
A pause.
Then Rachel whispered:
“Daniel has been preparing for this for a long time.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A familiar voice came through.
Daniel.
“You found Rachel’s things.””
I froze.
“How do you know?””
A quiet laugh.
“Because you’re not as careful as you think.””
“Where are you?””
“I’m somewhere Maya can’t hear you.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did you do?””
His voice became softer.
“I’m giving you one chance.””
“For what?””
“To stop digging.””
I looked at the recorder.
The letters.
The proof.
“No.””
A long silence.
Then Daniel said:
“Then you’ll learn why Rachel disappeared.””
The call ended.
And Detective Morgan’s phone immediately rang.
She answered.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“We found Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
May you like
She hesitated.
“He’s at the hospital.””
