Chapter 11: The Person Watching The Hospital
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
The photo showed Maya sleeping.
Taken through the hospital window.
Someone had been watching her.
Someone close enough to take the picture.
My voice barely worked.
“He was here.””
Detective Morgan immediately stood.
“When?””
I showed her the screen.
Her expression changed.
“We need hospital security.””
Everything moved quickly after that.
People entered the hallway.
Security officers checked cameras.
Nurses answered questions.
But I couldn’t stop looking at the picture.
Because Daniel wasn’t just hiding anymore.
He was sending a message.
I walked back into Maya’s room.
She woke up when I sat beside her.
“Mom?””
I forced a smile.
“I’m here.””
She looked at my face.
“What happened?””
I wanted to protect her.
I wanted to tell her everything was okay.
But I had learned something important.
Silence was how Daniel controlled people.
So I told her the truth.
“Daniel was here.””
Her face immediately changed.
“He saw me?””
“He didn’t get close.””
She grabbed my hand.
“Mom, you have to be careful.””
The words shocked me.
Not because they were wrong.
Because they sounded like something a child shouldn’t have to say.
“You shouldn’t have to protect me.””
She looked away.
“I had to protect someone.””
My heart broke.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Rachel.””
I sat up.
“What?””
Maya looked nervous.
“I didn’t tell you everything.””
I moved closer.
“Tell me now.””
She took a deep breath.
“The day I saw Daniel talking about Rachel… I found something.””
“What?””
“A box.””
“Where?””
“In his closet.””
My stomach tightened.
“What was inside?””
“Letters.””
“From Rachel?””
Maya nodded.
“I only read one.””
“What did it say?””
She closed her eyes.
“She said Daniel was dangerous when people stopped believing him.””
I felt cold.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought he would know.””
“Maya…”
“He always knew things.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because she was right.
Daniel always knew.
The hospital security team finally returned.
They found something.
A man had entered the building earlier.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
Detective Morgan showed me the security image.
A man wearing a baseball cap.
I didn’t recognize him.
“Who is that?””
“We’re checking.””
Then the detective looked at me.
“But he left something behind.””
She handed me a small envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Only one sentence.
*Daniel was never the only one hiding the truth.*
My stomach turned.
“What does that mean?””
Detective Morgan didn’t answer.
Because suddenly, the mystery had grown bigger.
The next morning, we received a call.
The police had found the man from the camera.
His name was Mark Evans.
And he had something to tell us.
When I met him at the station, he looked terrified.
“I didn’t want to get involved.””
“Then why were you watching my daughter?””
He looked down.
“Because Rachel asked me to.””
I froze.
“Rachel?””
He nodded.
“She knew something would happen to her.””
My voice shook.
“But Rachel disappeared years ago.””
Mark looked at me.
“I know.””
“Then how could she ask you?””
He reached into his bag.
And placed a sealed envelope on the table.
“I received this three years ago.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn’t you open it?””
“Because Rachel told me only one person should read it.””
“Who?””
Mark looked directly at me.
“You.””
My hands trembled as I picked up the envelope.
May you like
On the front was written:
*For Daniel’s next wife.*
