Chapter 8: The Truth Maya Was Protecting

I turned off the office light.

My heart was pounding so loudly I was sure Daniel could hear it.

The front door opened.

“Maya?””

Daniel’s voice echoed through the house.

Not angry.

Not threatening.

Almost gentle.

That scared me more.

Because I knew that voice.

It was the voice he used when he wanted someone to doubt themselves.

I stepped out of the office.

He froze.

His eyes moved past me.

Straight toward the open drawer.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel smiled.

A small, controlled smile.

“You went through my things.””

I stared at him.

“You kept my daughter’s medical records.””

His smile disappeared.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He walked closer.

“I was trying to help.””

“By writing ‘she knows too much’?””

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“How did you find that?””

I almost laughed.

Because he wasn’t asking if it was true.

He was asking how I discovered it.

“What does Maya know, Daniel?””

He looked away.

“Nothing.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

“I’m not afraid.””

“You are.””

He stepped closer.

“You need to calm down.””

There it was.

The same phrase.

The same way of making me feel like my emotions were the problem.

I held up the photograph.

“What is this?””

Daniel went completely still.

“Maya found that?””

“No.””

“Then who gave it to you?””

“That’s not important.””

“It is.””

“Why?””

Because his silence answered me.

The photograph mattered.

A lot.

I placed it on the table.

“What did Maya hear?””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“I asked you a question.””

“You don’t know what she’s capable of.””

My blood ran cold.

“She’s fifteen.””

“She’s confused.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She’s scared.””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

“Maya always had a problem with understanding situations.””

I couldn’t believe him.

“You’re blaming her?””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“No. You’re telling me the version that protects you.””

For the first time, his mask slipped.

“You think you know everything because you found a few papers?””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“I know because my daughter finally felt safe enough to tell me.””

Daniel went silent.

That was when I knew.

Maya had been right.

He was afraid of her speaking.

The next morning, I returned to the hospital.

Maya was awake.

She looked at my face and immediately knew something happened.

“Mom?””

I sat beside her.

“I need you to tell me about the day you saw that doctor.””

Her expression changed.

“What doctor?””

“The one in the picture.””

Maya looked away.

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“You found it.””

I held her hand.

“Yes.””

She started crying.

“I didn’t want you to know.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought you would be angry.””

“At you?””

She nodded.

I felt my heart break.

“Maya, I could never be angry at you for telling the truth.””

She wiped her tears.

“It was last year.””

“Last year?””

She nodded.

“Rachel’s name was mentioned.””

I leaned closer.

“What did you hear?””

Maya took a shaky breath.

“Daniel was talking to someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“What did he say?””

Her fingers tightened around mine.

“He said, ‘I handled Rachel. I’ll handle Maya too.’”

The room went silent.

I felt like the world stopped moving.

“Maya…”

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t know what it meant.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because the next day, Daniel told me he knew I was listening.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“He knew?””

Maya nodded.

“He told me if I ruined his life, he would make sure you blamed me.””

I closed my eyes.

The pain was overwhelming.

My daughter had been carrying this alone.

For months.

Maybe longer.

A doctor entered the room.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I stood.

“Yes?””

“We received new information from the police.””

My heart jumped.

“Police?””

He nodded.

“They searched Daniel’s office records.””

“And?””

The doctor looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“They found evidence that Daniel altered medical information before.””

I grabbed the edge of the chair.

“What kind of information?””

The doctor hesitated.

“Information about another patient.””

“Who?””

He looked down at the file.

May you like

Then said:

“Rachel Carter.””
