Chapter 12: Rachel's Last Message
I stared at the envelope.
My name wasn’t on it.
Not exactly.
But I knew who Rachel meant.
Daniel’s next wife.
Me.
For years, I had wondered what kind of woman Rachel was.
Daniel had described her as unstable.
Difficult.
Impossible to please.
But now I was holding something she left behind.
A message.
A warning.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was shaky.
But clear.
*If you are reading this, Daniel convinced you that I was the problem.*
My breath caught.
I kept reading.
*He is very good at making people doubt themselves.*
I looked up at Mark.
“How did you know Rachel?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“She hired me.””
“For what?””
“To investigate Daniel.””
My eyes widened.
“She knew?””
“She suspected something.””
“What?””
Mark leaned forward.
“Daniel wasn’t just hiding medical information.””
“Then what was he hiding?””
Mark took a breath.
“People.””
The word confused me.
“People?””
“Rachel believed Daniel had a pattern.””
I looked back at the letter.
The next line explained what she meant.
*Daniel collects people’s weaknesses. He keeps records so he can control the story.*
My fingers tightened.
That was exactly what I found.
The folders.
The notes.
The recordings.
Mark continued.
“Rachel discovered Daniel had been using private information to manipulate people.””
“Why?””
“Because he needed everyone around him dependent on him.””
I felt sick.
Then I reached the last page.
Rachel’s final words.
*If I disappear, don’t let him convince you that you imagined the truth.*
A tear slipped down my face.
Because those words weren’t only for me.
They were for Maya too.
I looked at Mark.
“What happened to Rachel?””
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“But you know something.””
He was silent.
Then he said:
“She found evidence that could destroy Daniel.””
“What evidence?””
“She hid it somewhere.””
“Where?””
Mark shook his head.
“She never told me.””
I folded the letter.
“Then why did she send me this?””
Mark looked toward the window.
“Because she believed you would find it.””
That night, I returned to the hospital.
Maya was awake.
I sat beside her.
“We found Rachel’s letter.””
Her eyes widened.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
Maya looked down.
“I’m sorry.””
I immediately shook my head.
“No.””
“I should have told you sooner.””
“No, Maya.””
I held her hand.
“You survived something that scared you.””
She looked at me.
Then whispered:
“Mom?””
“Yes?””
“I remember where Daniel hid something.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“The box.””
“The one from his closet?””
She nodded.
“There was something underneath it.””
“What was it?””
She looked terrified.
“A key.””
I leaned closer.
“Where is the key?””
Maya swallowed.
“I hid it.””
“Where?””
She looked toward the window.
“Because I thought if Daniel found it, he would know I knew.””
I held my breath.
“Maya, where did you hide it?””
She whispered:
“Inside my old school bag.””
I immediately stood.
“Where is the bag?””
Her face turned pale.
“Mom…”
“What?””
“Daniel took it.””
The room went silent.
Because suddenly, I understood.
He wasn’t just looking for the files.
He was looking for the key.
May you like
And if he found it first…
He would find whatever Rachel had hidden three years ago.
